What To Look For In Vintage Swimwear

Fashion & Cosmetics
Vintage clothing has been seeing a recent surge in popularity, especially with swimwear. It’s not uncommon nowadays to see girls in high-waisted swimsuits and flirty pin-up style swimwear. Vintage clothing has definitely been having comeback in the swimwear scene. The sexy, sassy and slightly conservative style of vintage fashion is a great look for anyone, no matter the age, size or color. Vintage style is surprisingly forgiving on many aspects.

If you are new with wearing vintage clothing, there are a few points that you should probably take into consideration. First and foremost, you might want to narrow down your choices by choosing the right decade for you. The 1930s to the 1960s were definitely some of the best times when it comes to vintage clothing styles, especially in swimwear. Each decade has a particular vintage clothing iconic look and it’s up to you to choose which one best suits your own personal style.

Here's a quick rundown of the particular look for each decade:

The 1930s had the lowest cut length, with swimsuits reaching up to almost tunic length. Some swimsuits also come with cute, frilly detachable skirt.

The 1940s, on the other hand, retains the low-cut leg. Swimsuit tops of this era often sported a sexy, halter-style. Ruchings were also a common feature of this era, which worked great for concealing body imperfections.

The corset-style boning was the look that the 50s' created. In general, the 1950s had been about creating the perfect, feminine silhouette that's why corsets were quite popular during this time. It helps accentuate the body's natural curves and stays put even in the water.

Belly-baring bikinis were the name of the game in the 60s. While the 60's bikini styles were more conservative than its modern counterparts, they were definitely a lot more daring than the earlier times. Each decade had its own particular look and it’s up to you to decide which style would best accentuate your figure, as well as your own personal style and preference.

In choosing the best vintage clothing swimwear style that would suit you, take into consideration your body shape and size. Most vintage styles are quite forgiving in these aspects; however some styles are certainly much easier to wear than others. The key to finding one that would best suit you is to find a suit that will accentuate your best features.

Low-cut leg swimwear is the best cut for those who want to show-off their legs. Most vintage swimwear offers this type of design, both in one-piece and two piece suits. However, if you want to draw away the attention from your legs, consider buying a 40s style skirted swimsuit. They offer coverage while retaining a cute and sassy vibe.

If your abs are your best feature, why not go for a 50s two-piece suit or a more daring 60s bikini? If you are looking for something that will enhance your entire silhouette, then corset-style one piece suits would be your best bet.
