Fort Irwin, which houses the U.S. Army's National Training Center (NTC), is not typically considered a glamorous place. It certainly would not be the place one would think of to find award winning directors or state of the art filming equipment. Yet on a clear spring day in 2013, this was all on base at Fort Irwin - in the process of shooting an unprecedented music video. The Secret State, an up and coming band with a unique blend of hard rock and electronica, came to Fort Irwin to film the official music video for their upcoming single "Fight or Flight". The song is about a patrol on deployment in Afghanistan and their homecoming. Several of the band members can definitely find themselves relating. "I never imagined that a year ago when I was in Afghanistan that a year later I'd be in fake Afghanistan, filming a music video," says guitarist Josh Jones. Jones and digital performer Danny Espinosa, responsible for the "beeps and boops" that add the electronica touch to The Secret State's hard rock style, have both been deployed to Afghanistan as defense contractors. Military experiences are a common bond amongst this Baltimore based quintet. Along with Jones and Espinosa, drummer Mike Marx-Gibbons has also served in the U.S. military, enlisting in the Army the day after 9/11 and serving as a Combat Medic in Iraq for two and a half years. The band members' military backgrounds have influenced their music, with lyrics and songs that directly deal with the realities of military life. "Fight or Flight" is one of these songs, and The Secret State made its video into a tribute to the soldiers who bravely serve their country. It features scenes of the band atop the Painted Rocks, a place where military units paint their unit patches on large rocks outside the front gates of Fort Irwin. The video stars active duty soldiers from the 11th Armored Cavalry, known as the Blackhorse Regiment, to capture hyper realistic combat scenes that give a real glimpse into what American soldiers go through overseas. "Fight or Flight" and its music video were meant to be an authentic representation of a soldier's life on deployment and the sacrifices faced in combat. The Secret State succeeded in creating the ultimate tribute to the men and women in the U.S. military. Keep an eye out for this unique and talented band.
