Independent private audiology clinic Hearing Studio are specialists in small, even invisible, hearing technologies. There are looking for 25 people to trial a range of newly-released hearing devices. The devices are produced by US-based manufacturer Starkey. Hearing Studio hopes to become the go-to clinic for invisible hearing solutions within the Melbourne area. Rachel Deane, Hearing Studio’s Principal Audiologist and Director, has over 15 years’ experience in the audiology industry, having worked in six different countries. Clients are able to choose from a range of products and trial their selected device in their own home and workplace. The trial process is composed of four appointments over approximately four weeks. At the initial appointment, the client will meet with Rachel and discuss the details of the trial. A hearing test will be conducted and the results clearly explained, and then Rachel will discuss the client’s needs and listening preferences. They will work together, discussing the pros and cons, to come to a decision on which product will suit the client best. Next comes the fitting appointment, where the device is tailored and fitted. The sound quality and performance parameters are fine-tuned until the individual is comfortable with the initial results. After around a week with the devices in their everyday life, the client will return for a fine-tuning appointment, where they are able to discuss the experience they have had such that the devices can be further tailored. As the patient’s auditory system acclimates to the new devices, the sound quality does need further refinement. In this way, the trialled solution is entirely bespoke – it is custom moulded to fit perfectly. The patients’ ear canal resonance, specific to them, is measured in each ear and that considered in the final solution such that certain frequencies are not over-amplified and then the sound quality is designed to satisfy that patients’ personal listening preferences. As one can imagine, we all grow up in different households, so some of us have a higher or lower tolerance (and therefore preference) to noise, or to base, or to music, or to higher pitches. Just as some people will squirm at the sound of fingernails being dragged down a chalk-board, others don’t find it irritating. This is the same sound, but it engenders different reactions, which are personal listening preferences. A great clinician will spend plenty of time with the patient to understand who they are and what sound quality they will find the most pleasant and effective. At the conclusion of the trial, Hearing Studio offers the devices to the client at a significantly discounted price. If the client does not find the devices to be of benefit, they are able to simply return them at no charge.
