Located on Menorca’s southern coast, Son Bou is a somewhat lower key resort, tucked behind a famous nature reserve fringed with dunes. But it does have its claims to fame: a kilometres-long stretch of beach, and enough family-friendly facilities to keep you busy and entertained for weeks. Thankfully, much of the action takes place near clusters of excellent Son Bou villas, so if you’re staying in this part of the island you will find your expectations tastefully exceeded. A Feast for the Palate If you’ve gone all the way to Menorca to stay at any of the lovely Son Bou villas, you probably very well know one of the greatest things that draw people to visit the island: its food. Menorcans have an unconditional love for their ‘fideua’, which is a type of paella that cleverly replaces rice with noodles. In Son Bou you can expect to almost always find this dish included on restaurant menus, alongside the usual favourites - such as the different types of tapas the locals love (and you will, too); the caldereta de llagosta (lobster stew); and the ‘brutally’ prepared but exceptionally sumptuous ‘battered octopus’. For a complete culinary exploration, you can find most of what Son Bou offers around its two major commercial centres. For an unforgettable dinner, here’s a quick tip: head over to Andreas at sunset, commandeer a seat on the terrace, then order a plate of their best paella and down it with a glass of red wine. Under the shroud of the setting sun this is an experience you'll talk about for years to come. An Abundance of Shopping Options Another great thing about the best Son Bou villas is that they’re often located in areas that are easily accessible to the shopping centres. Shopping is a bit like opening a surprise gift here: the options are eclectic enough that you run the ‘risk’ of being delightfully surprised. For regular tourists, there are little souvenir shops and arts and crafts stores, with their trinkets and other products meticulously made from ceramic. The jewellery on sale here bears the distinct Menorcan stamp—a style that will strongly remind you where it's from. But for genuine proof that you’ve been to the island, don't go home without a pair of albarques (or albarcas)—the rustic sandals crafted from discarded tyres and leather, which are fashionable and ubiquitous both on, and off the island. A Heady Mix of Sun and Beach If the island, as a whole, is famous for its beaches, consider Son Bou one of its most compelling selling points. The part of the ocean that laps on the shores of Son Bou is sometimes choppy or rough, but the waves provide the extra push for such water sports as the pedalos, jet skis and banana boats. What’s more, most of the best Son Bou villas are located near the coast, which means extra brownie points for convenience. Brenda Jaaback is the Managing Director of Bartle Holidays.
