The Algarve is known for its sun, sea and sand, but it also has wonderful food for you to experience every day during your holiday. Whether you are heading from Faro to Albufeira, or planning on visiting another resort in the region, you’ll find sumptuous dishes and delicious drinks wherever you go. Here is a guide go cuisine in the Algarve to get your mouth watering. Eat Fresh Seafood Every Day The Algarve boasts hundreds of miles of stunning coastline, so it's no surprise that seafood is big on the menu here. In fact, when you travel from Faro to Albufeira or any other resort, you will never find yourself far from a restaurant serving up the fresh catch of the day. Head to any traditional restaurant and you will usually have a large selection of fresh fish dishes to choose from. However, ‘pratos’ – the name given to the main course – can also consist of many other things. For example, Chicken Piri Piri is one of the most famous dishes from the region. But seafood is really the speciality here, and some of the best dishes that you will find in restaurants throughout the region include: Feijoada - a classic bean stew with bacon and sausage. Cataplana - a mix of clams, spicy sausage and herbs. Ameijoas à Bulhao Pato - a popular clam dish cooked with white wine, garlic and onions. Bacalau - dried and salted cod used in many dishes. Caldereida - a delicious stew made from a range of seafood. In addition to the main meals, there are always tasty starters to accompany any meal in a restaurant. The most common starter is ‘Couvert’, which comprises bread, olives, sardine pate, cheese and marinated carrots. However, soups are also very popular, especially gazpacho, and fish soups are also common. Delicious Desserts When you are visiting the region after travelling from the airport at Faro to Albufeira or elsewhere, you will also be able to try out a wealth of delicious deserts, called ‘sobremesas’. Some of the classics include Pudim Flan, which is a type of crème caramel, custard tart, called Pasties de Nata, and almond tart. Drink it All Down As well as food, you will also be able to enjoy many fine specialty drinks in the Algarve. Vinho (wine) sold in the region comes from all over Portugal, although you will often be able to find some from the Algarve itself, including from the Portimao area. However, the best-known drink here is, of course, port, and you will find plenty of excellent examples served up in bars and restaurants. Eat & Drink Well in the Algarve If you are planning a holiday to the Algarve, you’ll find delicious food and drink - everywhere from Faro to Albufeira to any one of the other resorts in the region. Make sure you eat out in the excellent restaurants and dine on as much fresh seafood as you can while you are here as the cuisine is one of the best things about the Algarve.
