How Long Will My Tile Floors Last? The city of Pompeii was an ancient Roman town near modern Naples. When Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, Pompeii, along with neighboring town Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, was destroyed and buried under as much as 20 feet of ash and pumice. When the site was unearthed some 1600 years later, it was discovered that many structures and artifacts had been perfectly preserved through the centuries – and this included a great many mosaic tile floors. Now, it's true that much of this preservation was due to the fact that the city was buried under tons of ash and rubble, shutting out all air and moisture, and that these are not conditions you are likely to duplicate with your own floors. However, it is also true that Pompeii was founded 160 years before Vesuvius acted up, so at least some of the floors were that old when they were buried. So depending on your point of view, the floor pictured here is either 160, 2,092, or 2,252 years old. All it seems to need is a touch with a damp mop.
