What exactly are cleanrooms and how are they built? These types of rooms are used in scientific laboratories, manufacturing plants, and other specialty areas. They are used to provide a controlled atmosphere in a particular part of a building.
In the Movies
Science fiction or crime television shows portray specially contained research labs all of the time. They are extremely common in the movies, too. For instance, in the movie, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, the government uses a type of clean space to contain E.T. and his friend, Elliot. They literally turn Elliot’s family home into a contained area with plastic and hazmat suits used to control the atmosphere. Another movie, The Andromeda Strain, shows a group of scientists working frantically to contain a deadly virus before it wipes out the human race.
Why Control the Atmosphere?
Controlling the atmosphere is actually fairly complicated. A room used for research must be kept clean of debris, dust, and other air particles. The air is designed to be recirculated and filtered so that it can be kept clear. Whatever is being worked on in the facility can be affected by air particles, so keeping an area contaminant-free is extremely important.
In order to keep an area free from particles, special equipment must be used. An HVAC system uses humidity and filters to control the air flow and keep it at specific temperatures and moisture levels. Special mops and cleaners are used to trap dust instead of spreading it, and people who enter the area must wear special suits so that they do not unintentionally bring outside contaminants and soil into the controlled room.
The design and building of cleanrooms must be rigorous and every detail thought out and planned for. Specialists and engineers are required on the job to ensure that all quality, codes, and safety measures are being met during construction.
