If you are looking forward to a relaxing yet active holiday in one of the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean, look no further than a stay in the stunning Portuguese town of Albufeira. Located on the southern coast of the country, Faro Airport to Albufeira transfers makes getting to the town simple and quick. Bearing the moniker "The Gateway to the Algarve", there is no shortage of beachfront or sunshine here. Plus, for those who like to get out and about and get active on holidays, it is a perfect place to hop on a bike and cruise around the coast, or travel inland to the small towns. Head out along one of the many routes around Albufeira, give your legs a workout and explore the beautiful countryside in this stunning part of the world. Be sure to ride the simple downhill from Foia, the Alte to Paderne route and the Ecovia do Litoral route. The Alte to Paderne route For a pretty easy scenic inland route to begin with, after you catch your Faro Airport to Albufeira transfers set out on the Alte to Paderne route. It begins in the town of Alte, just north of Albufeira. The route to Paderne is about twenty kilometres long and has a very small percentage of uphill peddling. There is a lovely waterfall at the bottom of one of the main hills, where you can have a swim to cool off, and several classic Portuguese restaurants and cafes that you can pop into for sustenance. From Foia to the sea To get your biking legs going once you have arrived on the Faro Airport to Albufeira transfers, you may want to start with this easy ride. Get a lift to the nearby town of Monchique and take a bit of time to explore – you'll be able to appreciate the differences between a coastal and inland Portuguese town. Then cycle up to the top of Foia, a nearby peak which, at 900 metres above sea level, is the highest in the Algarve. From here, take the easy route back down to the sea (with only a bit of uphill riding), taking advantage of the many points along the way to stop and enjoy the scenery. This journey is about twenty-two kilometres long and is a perfect intro to biking in the area. The Ecovia do Litoral route Even if you choose not to take the Faro Airport to Albufeira transfers, you can still get to Albufeira by the relatively new coastal path called the Ecovia do Litoral – although we wouldn't recommend doing this with luggage! The route is a coastal path that begins in Faro and runs westward, winding you along the shore and taking you by golf courses and resort towns, giving you ample opportunity to stop along the way. Spend the night in Albufeira and, if you want, you can continue westwards through the Marina and the nature reserve at Salgados. Or you can use your base in Albufeira to travel either east or west, depending on the mood you're in. Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct.
