High-school students in Deer Valley Unified and throughout Arizonawill see more rigorous graduation requirements in math startingnext school year. New state graduation requirements mandate high-school students addan extra year's worth of math and science to their schedules toobtain their diplomas. The Class of 2013 will be the first to be affected by the newrules, which call for three years of science and four years ofmath, including completion of algebra II. That's up from twoscience credits and three math credits required of this year'sgraduates. Although the new graduation requirements are more rigorous, students who struggle in math or transfer from a non-public orout-of-state school need not be daunted. Under the state's new guidelines, approved by the Arizona StateBoard of Education, school districts may place those students on apersonalized math curriculum that allows them to take a differentmath course in lieu of algebra II. On Tuesday, the Deer Valley school board adopted a policy thatoutlines the process for drafting individualized curricula. "Our goal is that this would be a last resort for any child forgraduation and they would have to have documentation of a lack ofprogress from middle school up through sophomore year," GayleGalligan, Deer Valley's director of curriculum, told the schoolboard. A personalized curriculum may be granted for students who havealready passed algebra I and geometry. Galligan said parents or guardians may request a personalizedcurriculum in the student's junior year. School districts must thenform a development team, which drafts the new curriculum and aprocess for monitoring the student's progress. Deer Valley's new policy requires that team to consist of at leastfour individuals: the child's parent or guardian, school counselor, math teacher and district administrator. If granted, Galligan said the student would take the alternativemath course -- such as finance, statistics or trigonometry --during his or her senior year. Board member Christy Agosta asked how many students could possiblyqualify for the personalized curriculum. Galligan said it is too early to tell. The hope is, she said, that such customized plans would be grantedto fewer than 1 percent of all Deer Valley high school students.
