When shaving today, we often use a shaving cream to produce a lather that helps the shaver glide nicely over our skin. A rich lather not only makes it easier to shave, but also protects the face from shaver cuts. Shaving cream isn’t always what has been used to produce this lather, however, nor is it necessarily the best option to keep your skin safe and soften your beard. Traditionally, shaving soap was and still is used to clean the face and create the foam to protect and improve the shaving experience. What is Shaving Soap? Typically, shaving soap is a solid bar or round shape, sometimes very similar in appearance to everyday hand or body soap. The difference is that you can whip shaving soap into lather by using a shaving brush and some hot water. The lather produced by the soap will protect the skin, clean it, soften the beard, and lessen your chances of missing hairs because they lay flat on your face. Shaving soaps have been around since at least the early 19th century in barbershops around America. For the most part, it has been replaced by shaving cream, but traditional shavers often prefer using shaving soap. How to Use Shaving Soap There are a few things you should keep in mind to make your shaving experience as pleasant as possible. First, you should always plan on shaving either during or directly after a hot shower. Hot water will help open up the pores and make shaving much easier. Get a shaving brush wet with hot water and whisk it over the surface of the shaving soap to create a rich lather. Next, apply the lather to the places on your face that you want to shave. Make sure when using the razor that you shave with the grain, not against it. When finished, rinse your face with cold water and apply aftershave.
