The Shanghai Museum although established in 1952 has since then been moved to various places, prior to moving into its current and permanent location at the People’s Square in 1996. Xing Tonghe, a local architect was inspired by true ancient Chinese perceptions and designed the museum building to resemble a ‘ding’ which is a particular type of bronze cooking vessel. Moreover the building itself is a circular top set on a square base which personifies the ancient Chinese way of thinking that the earth was square and the sky round.
Built to five storeys in height the museum has eleven galleries dedicated to showcasing Chinese history and culture in all its splendour. These galleries depict Chinese paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, bronze work, jades, sculptures, numismatics, seals and furniture dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The artefacts of the museum go to solidify the belief that ancient Chinese held profound wisdom and were able to manufacture products that were well ahead of their time. They were also skilled craftsmen which can be seen in many of the sculptures, furniture and jewellery items on display.
Not only is the museum a great place for the history lover and scholar but it is the best place to begin your journey of understanding as to what China was and how it came to be.
