ComForcare home care providers encourage clients and their families to eat healthy through the summer. With an abundance of healthy fruits and vegetables in season, it can be easy to eat a well-balanced diet. However, when traveling, food options can be limited and sticking to a healthy diet can be a challenge. To help people enjoy healthy a healthy diet while traveling, ComForcare offers these tips for eating healthy on the go: Choose sit-down café’s or restaurants over fast food chains. Beware though, that a restaurant meal can pack more than 1,000 calories, an average of 89 calories from fat, and three times the recommended sodium level for one day. Carefully select lighter options – soup, salad, or whole grain bagels, or fruit cups, or order from a low-calorie menu when possible Opt for a bowl or salad version of a burger or burrito to reduce calories from bread or tortillas. Many companies also provide a stripped-down healthier version of popular meals that may be available “off the menu”. Consider building a meal from healthy side options. For example, pair a small side salad with a cup of low-fat soup or a baked potato with low-fat sour cream and chives and fruit. Chances are, a side dish at a restaurant is not much smaller than your average serving of food at home. Substitute water for soda. Not only does this save you calories, but it is also less expensive. It is important to drink lots of water during the summer, especially while travelling. Keep a water bottle with you so you can sip throughout the day and stay properly hydrated. Salads can be as high in calories as a burger or entrée, so check the nutrition facts before you order. When possible, ask for the dressing on the side and forgo the bread accompaniment. Select low-fat dressings and be sure to load your salad with beneficial vegetables such as kale, spinach, tomato or broccoli. When you crave something more substantial, such as a burger, ask for a smaller size and then load on the vegetable toppings. Many places also offer a turkey or veggie burger option or allow you to swap out the bun for a lettuce-wrap style. Try to avoid French fries or salty potato chips offered as a side and select healthier fruit or vegetable options. Whenever possible, plan ahead and pack healthy snacks and meals. Ask family members or your home care provider for help planning or preparing nutritious, “brown bag” meals that you will provide the nutrients you need for strength and energy traveling requires. These can be eaten anytime, cost less, and can be much healthier. Home care providers are available to assist clients with meal preparation and planning whether they are at home or need something for the road.
