New York City Tourism Industry Boosts Newark

Travel & Tourism
The Newark, N.J, hotel industry is flourishing heading into 2012. While the ongoing evolution of the city's entertainment, cultural and company draws can be credited in part for the powerful performance, the genuine catalyst can be discovered in NY City's expanding tourism market. According to a Jan 2011 promotional release from the office of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in 2010: -48.7 million folk visited New York, up 6.8 % from 2009. -39 million of these visitors were from the U.S. And 9.7 million from abroad-both records. -The hospitality industry added 6,600 roles across all industry sub-sectors; the industry employs the most folks in summer, and July 2010 set an all time record for total roles with 323,200. -25.7 million room nights were sold, a new record, surpassing the prior high by 2,000,000 room nights. -Average daily room rates rose to $330 in December 2010, an 8.9 % increase over 2009. The mayor recently revealed the city's hotel inventory will reach ninety thousand rooms by the end of 2011. This record number represents a twenty-four % increase over the last 5 years. More than seven thousand further rooms are in the pipeline. These numbers all translate into an overall rising trend for Long Island City's $31 bn. tourist industry, according to a PR release from Mayor Bloomberg's office. It reads: "The Town is on course to reach an all-time high number of visitors this year...occupancy stayed at close to 85 p.c, the highest in the nation." Briefly the town is on pace to meet its objective of tempting 50,000,000 yearly visitors by 2012. What has this got to do with Newark? Put simply New Jersey's biggest town is a superb cost alternative choice to Manhattan. Guests staying at four- and five-star hostels in Newark pay about 1/2 what they'd to remain in NY Town . Yet they can still get there simply thru an impressive public transport network. Newark Penn Station offers fifteen minute transit to Manhattan with trains running twenty-four / seven. Newark's powerful transit substructure may also include a Light Rail line and bus service, as well as Newark Freedom Global aeroport. Over the last one or two years, we have seen an in-flow of NY City visitors-especially world travelers-staying at our Best Western Robert Treat Hotel (found at fifty Park Place in Newark). While they may at first have been inspired by a recession-based drive towards savings, the trend continues to put on momentum as the recovery takes hold. As a consequence, the Robert Treat Hotel saw a major jump in occupancy. Through the end of October, our average occupancy rate was 87.9 % for 2011-as compared with 81.4 and 86.1 % YTD in 2009 and 2010 . The hotel reached one hundred p.c occupancy during June, July and Aug 2011, representing record bookings for our property. In addition, Smith Travel Research reports that, among hostels considered rivals to the Robert Treat in Newark, average occupancies increased from 78.3 %, to 81.4 % to 82.9 p.c, year to date in 2009, 2010 and 2011 . Further illustrating the power of the Newark hotel market, Yard by Marriott broke ground in April for a 150-room hotel-the first new hotel in central Newark in 39 years-right outside of the Prudential Center Arena. In addition, Indigo Hotel has suggested a boutique 100-room property only 2 blocks away. Clearly , some travelers need to stay in NY, and they may keep on doing so. Nonetheless others are galvanized by economics. Newark obviously is an excellent choice for that population, and smart hotel operators are working to accommodate its wishes. We have intensified our concierge service to supply transport to the train station. We have NY City maps and leaflets available, and we even help guests buy tickets to shows and events.
