Together, marble and Formica make up a large portion of the countertops found in homes around the world. The beautifully textured marble stone and the easy-to-clean-and-maintain Formica laminate add style, sophistication and ease for many homeowners. While these materials are resilient and can last for years, the shine and finish of the stone or laminate can fade with time and use. Thoroughly cleaning and repainting your countertop can restore the surface to its original beauty. Instructions as follows: Firstly, clean marble countertops with a non-acidic bathroom cleaner and a soft cloth. If you want to make your own bathroom cleaner, combine 3 tbsp. baking soda to 1 quart of warm water and apply to the marble surface. Clean Formica countertops with a scour pad and a slightly abrasive cleaning agent, such as trisodium phosphate. This cleaning will remove all surface dirt, dust, oil and other contaminants. Secondly, sand the marble or Formica countertop lightly with wet, 220-grit sandpaper to remove tough stains or surface scratches. Soak the sandpaper in cold water for five minutes before beginning, and keep the sandpaper wet at all times during the procedure to avoid damaging the countertop. Thirdly, rinse away all cleaner and sandpaper residue with a soft cloth dampened in clean, warm water. Mask off any countertop areas that you do not want to apply finishing chemicals to, including sinks and walls. Cover these areas with protective plastic or paper and masking tape or painter's tape. Fourthly, wipe down the counter surface with a tack cloth to remove any residual cleaner or other contaminants. Any foreign materials on the surface can change or damage the way the refinishing products will stick to the surface. Fifthly, spray a thin, even layer of primer base onto the countertop surface with a paint sprayer; mix in hardener or other chemicals as required by your specific primer product. Allow five minutes for the primer to dry, unless otherwise instructed by your product. Sixthly, mix paint with hardener or reducer as required by your product. Spray the paint onto the countertop with thin, even strokes, covering the whole surface. Allow the first layer of paint to dry completely; this will usually take 15 to 20 minutes, unless otherwise indicated by your specific product. Seventhly, inspect your work; apply a second layer of paint if necessary. Allow the paint to dry completely for 24 hours before removing tape and paper, or wetting the countertop. Tips & Warnings Find materials for refinishing marble and Formica at hardware stores, home improvement retailers or stone and countertop specialty stores. Follow all specific instructions on your products; factors such as drying time or application method may vary from product to product. If you have never worked with a paint sprayer before, practice your technique on spare cardboard or other disposable surfaces until you get the feel for the pressure and speed of the sprayer. Apply spatter paint or other design products to change the appearance of your countertop. Finally, let me have a short conclusion.
