Historically, homosexuality is frowned upon by Indian culture. In fact, any public discussions about intimacy or sexuality are considered taboo. Before June, 2009, it was against the law for consenting homosexual adults to have sex. Although there have been significant changes in recent years, homosexuals of Indian descent continue to have difficulties revealing their true identity. Many gay Indian-Americans find themselves comparing their freedoms and rights to those still in the native country. Homosexual Indians in America Gay Indian-American citizens are a growing population. Homosexual relationships are much more accepted in this country than India. For more than forty years, activists and civil rights organizations have fought for social freedoms and protection for the homosexual community. Many Americans within the LGBT community find it hard to believe that the culture responsible for the Kama Sutra can have such a closed-minded perspective on homosexuality. Although there continue to be opposing views on the subject, America is much more liberal. Homophobia, or the fear of homosexuality, is becoming less prevalent in our society with gay Indian dating and gay marriage being far less contemptuous than in years gone by. Many couples feel comfortable going out and displaying affection with one another. Indian-Americans also appear to feel more comfortable coming out to family and friends. This may be the result of America’s candid discussions about sexual orientation and civil rights. Homosexual Indians in India Until recently, there was virtually no support for the homosexual citizens of India. Many families still follow the tradition of arranged marriages in order to ensure their children will have a respectable place in society. The Gay Rights Movement did not begin in India until the 21st century. Fortunately, things are progressing quickly. Before the court ruling that decriminalized homosexuality, many government and society leaders began to speak out against social injustice. Certain cities, such as Mumbai and Delhi, are becoming extremely popular among the gay community. There are also several gay-themed events. In the summer of 2008, over 2,000 people attended India’s first series of gay pride parades. On July 29, 2012, India hosted its first LGBTQ Rainbow festival, which celebrates a wide variety of genders and sexual orientations. The Most Popular Locations In general, the larger, more populated cities in the United States are the most forward-minded concerning homosexuality. West Hollywood, California has become a haven for the LGBT community. It is located within the city of Los Angeles. Commonly referred to as “Gay West Hollywood,” this area respects the culture and backgrounds of every. There are authentic Indian restaurants, as well as Indian-themed hotels. New York is another popular city among the gay Indian-American community. “The Big Apple” has several dance clubs, restaurants, and organizations designed to create an exciting and welcoming atmosphere. Las Vegas has also become a popular scene. The city has modified the glitz and glamour of their tourists spots to welcome members of the gay community. There are gay bars and clubs at literally every turn. While gay marriage is still illegal in the state of Nevada, several hotels also provide commitment ceremonies for couples.
