How to: Promote a Charity

Legalities Concerning Charities

The actual legal definition of a charitable organisation varies considerably and this vastly depends upon the country and sometimes, the region. Rules, laws and so forth also very considerably and this has a big impact upon the charities and the types in which they represent. Financial figures (e.g., tax refund is part of an important indicator that enables a relatively accurate assessment of financial sustainability for charity evaluators to weigh up. Charities reputations rely heavily upon the assessment; donors and societies are the main players that put money into charities and must be able to see the long term aspirations and sustainability of the charity, otherwise a charity could fail/not reach its potential.

Charities Helping to Raise Millions

Fundraising for charity is and must be one of the best things we humans can do for one another. There are so many events held across the world each and every year, which is nothing short of astonishing and helps to raise millions; no doubt over the years, this has turned into billions raised for several great causes, which has also undoubtedly saved millions of lives and gone into the research that has made this possible.

Types of Charities

There are so many great causes in which people can raise money for; Health charities (heart disease, cancer etc), children that have been abused, adult refuge, victims of crime, animal causes, environmental charities, International charities (health related, food, clothing etc), education charities, arts and culture charities. There are so many more charities within those sectors, but those are the main types of charities that people raise vast amounts of money for.

Charities are non profit organisations and many workers within the industry work voluntary; think local charity shops, where employees don’t get paid for the hours and efforts they put into seeing products for charity. The main types of workers are more often than not retired from their full time job or in some cases are still working part time an feel that they can give something back to society and what better way? Many of the charity shops support certain types of charities, an example being the British Heart Foundation.

Methods to Promote Charities

To promote a charity or cause successfully there are certain ways to go about this: TV Ads – sometimes the government will fund TV campaigns in order to make the public aware of a charity if it’s of beneficial to many and is raising awareness. A recent example would be the Breast Cancer Research project. TV Ads are a fantastic way to get a message across to millions across the UK and in some cases the rest of the world. Sponsorship – sponsoring sports personnel, teams or events in general is another way to get our charity recognised. Leaflet Distribution and Dropping – handing out leaflets in local or regional areas is one of the cheapest options if you are unable to attract funding to promote the charity in which you present. Newspapers and Radio – talk to your local, national press or even radio stations if you are planning an event for people to take part in to help raise funds – you will not have to pay and will give you some much needed exposure.

However you decide to promote your charity, there will always be people ready to donate money, even if that is a small amount and therefore, there is always hope for those who have certain illnesses or fin themselves in desperate situations. Obviously there are other types of charities; however, the most popular charities will always be the ones that are raising money for a well known illness or cause. Also when your promote a charity you will undoubtedly require collection bucketsin order to collect money from the public.

If you are a local sized charity, you can gain exposure, but think about your options carefully in terms of the best way to gain exposure and the best methods; often controlled by budget and donations.
