Attractions to Visit in San Jose

If you happen to be in San Jose, Costa Rica, there some tourists attractions that can help you understand more details on Costa Rican culture, art, and history.

Parque Nacional

The Parque Natcionál (National Park ) can be found in the center of San Jose.monumento-nacional-costa-rica It is a good spot to relax and people watch any time throughout the day. During the business week, many locals who work downtown go to the park to enjoy lunch. You may even see lots of people reading and children playing in the park. The centerpiece of the park is a large statue called Monumento Nacional. The figure is symbolic of Juan Santamaria as well as other Costa Ricans who helped drive the renegade soldier William Walker outside of Costa Rica. The park also has several other statues that are relevant to the establishment of Costa Rica for an independent nation. Among Latino figures who are famed for establishing Latin America's independence from Spain, you will also find statues of famous Latino artists including Andre's Bello, a Venezuelan poet, and Jose Marti, a Cuban poet. The park is rather well-maintained, with tropical green plants, lush grass and tropical trees which give some shade. It you remain until the sun sets, you will be greeted by swarms of tropical birds who come to make calls which signal the night is approaching.

Museo Nacional de Costa Rica

The National Museum is the most essential historical museum in the country. The setting is the former army barracks where there are numerous bullet holes in the exterior walls. Within you will delight in an extensive look at the history of Costa Rica from pre-Columbian times until the present. For instance, one of many displays is a jade carving that dates back 2500 years. The artifacts presented are those which have been uncovered from the numerous archaeological digs through the country and offer a glimpse in the everyday life of the native peoples who inhabited this land prior to arrival of the Europeans.

Plaza de Cultura

The Plaza de Cultura is one other attraction in San Jose. It can be found in the Cathedral district between Avenida Central and Avendia Segunda. Just to the south is the Teatro Nacional and Grand Hotel. Construction began on the plaza in 1973 and completed in 1982 under the direction of architects Jorge Bourbon and Edgar Vargas. The Museo de Oro can be found below the Plaza, so this is a great place to start, if you want a taste of Costa Rica history and culture. The plaza was initially landscaped with ornamental plans; however, these have been replaced by indigenous plans which accurately reflect the Costa Rican culture, such as coffee, banana, sugar cane, cacao, amongst othe tropical flora. These plants in-turn attract lots of Costa Rica's native birds to the plaza.

Museo de Jade

Museo del Jade "Marco Fidel Tristán Castro" can be found on the bottom floor adjacent to the INS building between Calle 7 and Calle 9. This museum was founded to safeguard ever rising theft and commercialization of Pre-Columbine art in Costa Rica. It is in operation for 27 years and features 7,000 green-jade artifacts, from Central and South America, along with precious gems and stones including ceramics, gold, shells, bone and other artwork created throughout the period from 500 BC to about 800 AD. You should set aside about an hour or so for the official tour which only costs 500 colones.
