In Maldives, graveyards were once considered frightening places and were generally avoided. It was believed that evil spirits lurk there, especially during the night. In fact, in ancient times, people belonging to certain cults used to go there to meditate hoping to obtain magical powers. Although some locals still believe this, they are in the minority. The local graveyards are intriguing places to visit and make an unusual tourist attraction. One of the most popular graveyards in the country is the Muslim Graveyard, which is located in Malé, the capital of Maldives. A number of sultans, noblemen and heroes are buried at the Muslim Graveyard. Although many of the tombstones located here are very old and one can barely make out the inscriptions, it is still an interesting place to visit. The tombstones are very tall and oval in shape and are hewn out of rough stone. Those visiting the graveyard can also visit the Hukuru Miskiiy or Grand Friday Mosque. The Hukuru Miskiiy is the oldest mosque in the country and was built in 1656. With walls made of coral stones and adorned with intricate carvings, the mosque is a definite 'must visit'. Malé is situated in the North Malé Atoll and is home to many of the country's cultural attractions. It is the only point of entry into the country and is the most populous city in Maldives. Formerly a walled city, Malé was traditionally the King's Island and is still full of historical attractions. In an ironic twist, Malé, the capital of the country known for its beaches, does not have many good beaches of its own. Instead, the best beaches are found in the various islands that make up the archipelago. Tourists looking for good Maldives resorts with an excellent beach can try the Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas.
