It is not an uncommon misconception that we as South Africans are forced to be almost solely reliant in our wholesale industry upon international importation to supply what is perceived as the backbone of our economy with products from around the globe. What is, however, sorely overlooked is the fact that due to the crashing American and European economies, our own economy has paid a devastating price and as a result so has our nation. It is of the utmost urgency that all individual professionals and corporations’ alike take stock and begin to become cognoscente of the fact that we, in this country and at this juncture, have the resources amidst us to corporately and deliberately challenge and change that paradigm. It is a frustrating reality that the myth that only products shipped and flown in from around the globe are up to par. During the past very dynamic democratic years South Africa has found its voice yet struggles to see its full internal value with regards to running the economic race in this century. Truth be told, we have consummate wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers. To date, however, the true potential of e-commerce wholesale and import has fallen short of a glorious promise. If we, as a nation, do not harness the miracle of e-commerce in conjunction with traditional (and often geriatric) commerce we will certainly not find ourselves in a position to overhaul and rehabilitate our economy within the next fifty years or so. By its very nature e-commerce lends itself to the radical transformation of the wholesale business in Southern Africa. Online companies such as BuyDirect.za.com are capable of facilitating networking and the making of contacts with LOCAL suppliers, manufacturers and wholesalers. For example: A businessman in Cape Town intends importing 500 blankets for a church organization. Currently that businessman immediately assumes that the product will need to be imported “since that is the most cost effective method”. We advocate and create the platform for the importers that are literally on our doorsteps. By utilizing the existing framework so much of the time delays and frustrations can be eliminated that currently plague the market. Thanks to this technology, at the press of a few buttons thousands and upon thousands of wholesalers can be economically uplifted. The result: companies grow; they employ more staff – less unemployment – South Africans find employ and are able to pave the way to better socio-economic futures for our children. Many, many more children are able to get an education. The bottom line is that society will be enriched and raised up in ways we could never have imagined. Let it also be noted that there are many manufacturers and wholesalers who are able to provide us with the goods we believe are only available to us when sent from China right here on our doorstep. We have the resources and networks in place – we just need to utilize them. Proactive honing of skills and simply “getting with the times” can make all the difference.
