Imitation or more commonly known as "Fake" Pearls have several different names....Costume, Simulated, Artificial and many more. One needs to be very careful when purchasing Pearls and to be able to tell the difference between a Cultured Pearl and a "Fake" Pearl. Below, we have given you details to look into so you can make that easy distinction when needed: Imitation "Fake" Pearls are primarily made up of plastic, shell, glass or ceramic. After that they are layered with a varnish to give the consumer a false image that the Pearl is real with its shimmering iridescence and lustre found in Cultured Pearls. How do you tell the difference: Imitation pearls in a strand will be exactly the same from each other. There will be no difference in its colour and lustre between any of them. When looking at Imitation Pearls under a microscope or a regular Jewelers' 10 x power loupe, the Imitation Pearl shows no signs of ridges near the drill hole. With a Cultured Pearl you will be able to see ridges near the drill hole. Feel the pearls and rub them together gently or on the tip of your tooth. If they feel grainy or sandy they are real pearls. If they are smooth then they are Imitation pearls. As for the colour, Imitation pearls seem to have no depth in their colour, lustre or tone and this is easily detectible. Another way to detect the difference is to simply hold the pearls in your hand. Cultured Pearls generally feel cold when you hold them. Imitation Pearls feel warmer. Please always purchase Pearls from a Jeweller that you trust as an untrained eye can easily be misguided. Follow these simple rules and guidelines given to you by UMI Pearls and you should be fine.
