Poker Hands Ranking Explained: From Least to Most Valuable

Recreation & Leisure
There are various hands that can win a game of poker for an individual. However, each of these hands is categorized based on its level of difficulty. The toughest hand to get is the one with the most value, whereas the easiest hand to obtain has the least value. Here is a guide to the poker hands ranking and how these hands affect poker odds. The hands are ranked from least valuable to most valuable.

High Card

This is the most basic poker hand that you can have among your set of cards. If there are no other hands on the table, the player with the highest card (usually Jack, Queen, King, or Ace) wins the round.

One Pair

A pair of cards is made when two cards of the same number or letter are obtained. For example, two "four" cards constitutes a pair, and so do two "queen" cards. If more than one player on the table has a pair, the pair with the highest card wins. When two players have the same pair, the highest card among their remaining three cards wins.

Two Pair

When a player gets more than one pair among their five cards, they have what is called a two pair. An example of a five-card draw with two pairs would be 4, 4, 3, 3, K. In this case, there is a four pair, a three pair, and a king. Once again, pairs of higher cards defeat pairs of lower cards.

Three of a Kind

Three of a kind refers to having three cards of the same number/letter. For example, A, A, A, 2, 3 is a hand with three of a kind.

Straight

A straight is obtained when the five cards read in chronological order. For example, 7, 8, 9, 10, J or 9, 10, J, K, Q are two examples of straights. The higher straight is more valuable than a lower straight.

Flush

A flush constitutes five cards of the same type. For example, having five spade cards or five hearts cards gives a player a flush. The player with the higher card in their flush wins, if more than one player has a flush.

Full House

A full house consists of a combination of the three of a kind and a one pair. For example, in a five card set up a full house would be 3, 3, 3, 5, 5 or 5, 5, 5, K, K. The higher three of a kind defeats a tie. If both players have the same three of a kind, the higher pair wins.

Four of a Kind

This occurs when a player has four cards of the same number/letter, such as K, K, K, K, 2

Straight Flush

A straight flush is a combination of a flush and straight. For example, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 of spades would be considered a straight flush. The straight flush with the highest card wins in the event of a tie. The highest possible straight flush is the A, K, Q, J, 10 of a particular kind, and it is referred to as the royal flush.
