Mr. Edwards was accused of masterminding a plan to use money fromtwo wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress during his run forthe White House in 2008. It was not immediately clear whether prosecutors would retry Mr.Edwards on the other counts. Mr. Edwards did not react when the verdict and mistrial wereannounced, but he was happy and smiling about an hour earlier whenthe jury said it had reached a verdict on one count after nine daysof deliberations. The acquittal and mistrial highlighted a day of confusion when thejudge mistakenly believed jurors had reached a verdict on all sixcounts. Instead, the jury told the judge they had a unanimous decision ononly one charge, and the panel was sent back to the jury room formore talks. About an hour later, the jury sent the note to thejudge saying it had exhausted talks. Prosecutors accused Mr. Edwards of knowing about roughly $1-millionbeing funnelled to former aide Andrew Young and the candidate'smistress, Rielle Hunter. They also said he was well aware of the$2,300 legal limit on campaign donations. The weeks-long trial has gone into the most intimate details of asordid sex scandal that effectively ended Mr. Edwards's politicalcareer and the elaborate cover-up that involved his most trustedaide, the aide's wife, and the two wealthy donors. Mr. Edwards's lawyers have argued that the ex-U.S. senator neverknew that taking the money violated campaign finance law, and thathis personal transgressions weren't illegal. The jury has made more news in recent days of the trial, asDistrict Judge Catherine Eagles has closed the court to discussunspecified issues with jurors. Four alternate jurors began wearingmatching coloured shirts to court and one of them was said to beexchanging smiles with Mr. Edwards. Judge Eagles told thealternates on Wednesday that they no longer needed to come to courtduring deliberations. The jurors, whose identities have been withheld throughout thetrial, asked to see dozens of trial exhibits during deliberations, relating to donations from Rachel (Bunny) Mellon and trial attorneyFred Baron. Ms. Mellon, who is 101 years old, did not testify. Mr. Baron diedin 2008. Elizabeth Edwards died in late 2010. More related to this story Video: Edwards not guilty on one count, mistrial on others.
