The Antiquities Act of 1906 authorizes the President to assign national monument status to "historic landmarks, historic and prehistoric structures and other objects of historic or scientific interest." The National Park Service, Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife and Bureau of Land Management all manage different types of national monuments from free-standing structures such as The Washington Monument in D.C. to the Vermilion Cliffs in Arizona. Building a monument requires support from the community and a worthy subject. Instructions as follows: Firstly, determine what event or person, area or object you are planning to commemorate, honor or recognize with your monument. The grander the event or significance of the person, the more likely you are to find support for the erection of the monument in your community. Secondly, design your monument in a style befitting what it represents. A poorly designed memorials and monuments could detract from or belittle the moment or person it was intended to honor. A compelling design will enhance the monument's place in the community while paying appropriate tribute. Thirdly, determine the best place to build your monument. Hill tops or areas with clear visibility allow for optimal viewing of your monument. A monument hard to find or not easily viewable is not as effective a reminder as one that people can see on a daily basis. Fourthly, build your monument using durable materials or tools. As lasting tributes, monuments endure both time and harsh weather. A poorly constructed monument that quickly falls apart will embarrass you, the community and what it represents. Fifthly, identify any scenic area or unique geological structure in your community you believe needs government protection. Natural monuments are afforded equal protection under the Antiquities Act as manmade structures. Contacting the appropriate division within The Department of the Interior will allow you to determine if your area qualifies for consideration. Sixthly, research the historical significance of any structure in your community you believe needs preservation. Ancient structures and sites of historic events qualify for national monument status. Seventhly, contact your local congressional representative about your monument becoming a national monument. Starting a petition within your community will show the support your monument receives. Enough signatures and congressional support could get your monument the momentum it needs for consideration of national monument status from the Office of the President. Tips & Warnings If your monument does not qualify for national monument status, petition your state's Division of Parks and Recreation for possible state monument designation. Scenic areas that don't qualify for monument status could qualify for the Department of Transportation's Scenic Byways Program. Finally, let me have a conclusion.
