The term six sigma jobs is one that means a lot to some people, but very little to others! So what exactly does this mysterious term mean? We’ll discover the answer in this article! The term essentially is a set of strategies that were developed by the technology firm Motorola in the mid 1980s. It later was developed by a man called Jack Welch in the large electronics company General Electric, in the mid 1990s. Today, it’s use covers a wide variety of manufacturing industries. These strategies are aimed at improving the quality of industrial output by identifying and removing errors in production, while ensuring uniformity of industrial and manufacturing output. There are many six sigma jobs available out there at a range of different levels, named after the belts used in many martial arts across the world, for example black belt, green belts, orange belts and more. The people in these roles are experts in devising quality management methods which include statistical methods. So now we know what these roles involved, where did the name come from? It actually comes from manufacturing terminology. A sigma rating is used in manufacturing to indicate the yield of that particular manufacturing process, with the yield being the percentage of perfect or defect free products created through the manufacturing process. Six sigma jobs are roles where employees are tasked with maintaining a process where 99.99966% of products are completely free from defects. This basically means that if one million products are made, an average of only 3.4 products would have a defect. The firm Motorola coined the term and trademarked it, using it as a sign of quality on their products. Their quest for fewer defects had saved the company over $17 billion USD by 2006. The electrical firm Honeywell are also well known for their use of six sigma jobs, with the methods applied to all their manufacturing departments. In recent years, this method of eliminating waste and defects when making products has been combined with lean manufacturing to create an entirely new process. This new standard seeks to promote business and operational excellence and is a method employed by businesses including IBM and Sandia National Laboratories. The two large companies employ people in lean six sigma jobs not just to increase efficiency, but also on growth. So with the term defined, what roles are there available inside these organisations that employ these methods? Opportunity for career growth is huge, and there are six levels. Right at the top is the executive leadership, for example the CEO and the top management. Below that are champions, who aim to implement six sigma across the entire organisation. Champions also mentor black belts, which are six sigma jobs operating under master black belts. Finally, entry level positions are offered in the form of green belt roles. These people are responsible for manufacturing methods along with other job responsibilities. They report to black belts. In some larger organisations, yellow belt roles are offered as training positions.
