By THE HERALD-WHIG STAFF The second half of the Quincy Gems' left-handed slugging duo fromtheir 2011 squad was selected in Wednesday's Major League BaseballFirst-Year Player Draft. The Washington Nationals took Bryan Lippincott in the 19th roundwith the 594th pick overall. Lippincott played third base and firstbase last summer for the Gems, helping them win the Prospect Leaguechampionship. He batted .345 with 10 home runs and 57 RBI forQuincy during the regular season, before adding two home runs andfive RBI during the playoffs. Lippincott's selection came a day after Chris Serritella, the otherlefty slugger from the Gems' 2011 team, was taken in the fourthround by the Philadelphia Phillies. Lippincott and Serritella werethe only former Gems taken in this year's draft. Lippincott played third base this spring as a senior at ConcordiaUniversity-St. Paul, but the Nationals selected him as a firstbaseman. Lippincott recently finished in third place for the Tino MartinezAward, given annually to Division II's top baseball player. He ledDivision II with a .494 batting average, to go along with 10 homeruns, 19 doubles and 52 RBI. His .504 on-base percentage rankedsecond in Division II, and his .864 slugging percentage rankedthird. Three former Hannibal Cavemen were also selected Wednesday, whichfeatured rounds 16 through 40. Josh Smith, a member of the 2009 Cavemen, went in the 25th round,No. 766 overall, to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The left-handed pitcherrecently completed his senior season at Wichita State, where hecompiled a 6-4 record and 3.10 ERA in 95 2/3 innings pitched. Hestruck out 77 and walked 32. Smith went 1-3 with a 3.93 ERA in 52 2/3 innings with the Cavemenin 2009. James Hudelson, who pitched for Hannibal in 2009 and 2010, went inthe 28th round, No. 861 overall, to the Chicago White Sox. The right-hander posted a 3.10 ERA in 14 relief appearances thisspring as a senior for Delta State, which finished as the DivisionII runner-up. He struck out 26 batters in 20 1/3 innings. In two seasons of relief work for the Cavemen, Hudelson had a 2.01ERA. Jake Hermsen, a member of the 2010 and 2011 Cavemen, also went inthe 28th round, with pick No. 866 overall, to the Los AngelesDodgers. The left-hander had a 3-8 record with a 5.13 ERA as asenior at Northern Illinois this spring. In two seasons with Hannibal, Hermsen was 5-5 with a 2.98 ERA.
