Cooking is one of those activities that anyone can participate in. You can shop for ingredients, and follow a recipe's instructions, right? Are you able to get your hands on basic cooking equipment? Then, you can cook! If you want to learn how to enhance your culinary abilities, look at these tips to find advice on how to prepare great meals. When you are making stir-fry dishes, make certain the meat is thinly sliced on the bias. This can take time and be tricky. When the meat feels firm, pull it from the freezer and cut across the grain at a 45 degree angle. Make sure that all of your spices are stored away from heat and light. Storing spices in lighted areas or warm areas can reduce their length of freshness. To keep your spices spicy and fresh, store them in an area that is cool and dark. Fresh spices can greatly enhance your meals, making this effort well worth your time. Sharp knives will make cooking so much more efficient. Knives that have been allowed to dull are dangerous and difficult to use. If you use a dull knife you will need to exert more force to get the job done and run the risk of cutting yourself, whereas with a sharpened knife you can do your prep work easier and quicker. Proper timing of grilled meat can be tricky to figure out. A meat thermometer, digital if possible, is always a great idea. This way you can ensure that the inside of the meat is also cooking well. Meat thicker than 1.5 inches should be cooked under a closed grill. Several times your burgers will stick to the grill, and it is hard or impossible to remove them without destroying their shape. To prevent this, brush the grill with a bit of vegetable oil to keep your foods from sticking. To saute vegetables, use chicken broth in place of oil or butter. The broth will add to the flavor of the vegetables and cut back on the amount of oil that is typically needed to saute them. This is a tasty way to cook your veggies. When preparing your ingredient list for meals, take care to look at the nutritional content in labels. Most cooking supplies have hidden ingredients that could be unhealthy. Look for hidden amounts of sodium and sugar that will contribute over time to reduced health. Keep the dressing for a salad off to the side when you're having guests over for a meal. It is much better to let guests add the amount of dressing that they prefer according to their needs. Also, try and include different types of dressings. You should consider drying your tomatoes on your own. Prepare by cutting ripe tomatoes into half-inch-thick slices or slicing Roma tomatoes in half down their long axis. Put the sliced tomatoes onto a cooling rack, and lightly salt the cut-side. Put a cookie sheet underneath the cooling rack and then set the pair in an oven heated to 190 degrees. Leave for as many as ten hours. Once done, you can store them in your freezer in plastic bags. You can also pack dried tomatoes in a jar with some fresh herbs and olive oil. Refrigerate and use within 2 weeks. Put your fresh herbs together in a bunch and use kitchen shears to cut them all at once. This will keep the herbs drier and lighter than chopped with a knife. Adding salt to the boiling water when cooking pasta will help flavor it while it cooks. This process will allow the salt to season your pasta while it cooks. Salting the pasta after cooking it does not allow it to hold seasoning that well. Do not bake a cake too long or to short of a time. While the recommended baking times are good guidelines, they can be affected by factors like elevation. You need to push a toothpick into the center of the cake. If your toothpick is clean, your cake is ready to be taken out of the oven. However, if there is batter left on the toothpick, keep baking for a longer period of time. Learn a little bit about any vegetables or fruits you haven't cooked with before. You may be surprised, with a little research, at the versatility of a new food. If you do your homework before you start cooking, it will be more fun. You might want to show off by making a new dish, but you should stick to something you know if the meal is important. Many people want to impress a loved one, new in-laws or a boss with their cooking. Please them by cooking a recipe you are familiar with, and can cook very well. Use softened butter for baking instead of melted butter. Try popping your melted butter to freeze in the freezer as you start making your dough. When dough is cool, it is less likely to spread haphazardly. Fried rice is the perfect dish to use up your extra vegetables and meat. Use rice that is left over; if you must prepare it that day use a little less water to have drier rice. Fry all the veggies and meat with some oil, and then add in the rice, followed by seasoning with garlic, ginger, soy sauce and additional spices. Always use spoons and spatulas that are designed for the nonstick cookware that you're cooking with. Harder utensils, such as metal or wooden ones, can scratch or gouge the nonstick coating, reducing the effectiveness of the pan, and potentially allowing the coating to flake into your food. This can ruin your recipes, and may even be dangerous if you eat some. Cooking is a skill, hobby and vocation. There are so many ways of preparing food, and you should learn all you can from the people that are best at it. So, try out some of these tips the next time you are in charge of the kitchen!
