Cooking can become drudgery after you do it for a while. Why not make things interesting by expanding your cooking knowledge? When you consider that cooking not only feeds your family, but also offers you a fun hobby to explore, it just makes sense to expand your abilities. Read this article to start transforming your usual cooking into something more fun.

Always bake pie and tart crusts for longer than the recipe specifies for best results. Your objective is to cook them past the point of being pale blonde, to the point where they become a golden caramel color. This deeper color is evidence that the sugar has caramelized in the crust for added sweetness.

When preparing stir-fry dishes, slice meat as thinly as possible and on its bias. Cutting meat thinly can be difficult and time-consuming. When the meat is not quite frozen, take it out of the freezer and slice it against the grain at an angle of 45 degrees.

Try partially frozen meat to make thin meat slicing easier. This is great for various Oriental meals, such as Thai or Chinese dishes. The tissues of partially-frozen meat do not tear and stretch as much; this makes cleaner slices possible. Having said that, you must be certain to let the meat strips thaw out prior to cooking them to ensure even cooking.

For crispier French fries, let raw potatoes stand for 30 minutes in a cold pot of water. A cold water soak helps the potatoes stand up to the rigors of deep fat frying.

Replacing some of your mashed potatoes with equal amounts of cauliflower is a healthy alternative, reducing fat and calories. Cauliflower's bland taste makes it easier for it to blend with the potatoes, so that you can't taste it, and it picks up other ingredients. Cauliflower is also the same texture and color of potatoes when mashed so it's a great way to add more veggies, while lowering calories from classic mashed potatoes.

It is sometimes difficult to determine when your foods are thoroughly cooked on a grill. A meat thermometer can give you a precise temperature, reassuring you that the meat is fully cooked. If you have thick meat, more than a inch and a half, close the grill to make cooking time shorter.

It's very frustrating to try to cook a tasty hamburger and see it deformed or ruined, because it gets stuck to your grill. The way to prevent this is to coat the grill with some vegetable oil prior to putting any food on the grill.

When cooking vegetables, it is a good idea to use chicken broth. Chicken broth adds flavor to vegetables and prevents them from getting stuck to the bottom of the pan. Broth can be found at nearly any grocery store, and is very inexpensive.

When you are purchasing ingredients to make something read your labels. There are ingredients that may be unhealthy. You want to ensure that anything you buy is not high in sugar or salt because both can cause major health problems if eaten too much.

This way, you'll have fresh fruit to use for cooking all year long. You will also be able to enjoy certain fruits even when they are not in season.

By following this advice, you are on your way to making cooking fun. Turn cooking into an enjoyable and appetizing way to educate yourself on the fascinating topic of food. You may even learn something about yourself as you begin to develop preferences for the type or style of food that you like to cook the most.
