The Twentieth Wife by Indu Sundaresan describes a story of love, politics, and hardships in seventeenth century India. Perhaps, the story may not sound appealing to you if you are not a history lover. But, it this is so, I would say there is something interesting for you too in the story. Indu has made a well balance of the facts and imagination in the book, so it does not appear boring to anyone who has no interest in history books. I, Shazad Pirzada, read the book almost six months ago. The book was suggested to me by one of my friends. Before beginning reading, I felt the book would be like other novels but once I began reading I completely became enthralled. I swear I loved reading the book very much and I would love to recommend the same too you as well. The novel recounts the story of a girl brought up in unfortunate circumstances and becomes one of the most powerful women of the Mughal Empire. The girl about whom the story narrates is the empress in whose honor the Taj Mahal was built. Do you remember the name of the lady on whose memory the Taj was built? Surely, you will be well aware of her name, nevertheless I tell you her name and her name is “Nur Jahan”. The lady is considered to be one of the most powerful women ever to be recorded in Indian history related to the Mughal era and her story is full of inspiring moments. Her parents were refugees from Persia. The lady first laid her eyes on her husband to be when she was merely eight years old at the time of his husband’s first marriage. Instead of having plenty of complicated obstacles, she decided to marry Emperor Jahangir one day in her life. She encountered volumes of impediments and some of them were not easy to overcome at all. When she married to Jahangir, she had a daughter. You can easily imagine how much difficulty she would have to face to achieve her goal because it was the India of 17th century, in which women were kept under lots of restrictions and no one would love to marry a woman with a child. She was the first woman whom the Emperor married because of love. She was the twentieth and last Empress to be added to his harem.
