Nothing relaxes us quite like a few days at a spa. Ease aches and pains with a deep tissue massage. Sweat out the nasty toxins from your body in a sauna or revitalise your pores with a facial scrub. It really does leave you feeling on top of your game. However, there are some spa treatments that are a little bit more unusual. They may seem unconventional but they have been proven to be effective. With more and more spa break UK destinations offering these crazy treatments, maybe it’s time you gave them a go. Sawdust spa How do you fancy putting on a thick hooded sweater and being buried in sawdust? Because that’s what you get with a Hinoki Enzyme spa. A hole is dug for you in the dust, which you then get in. Then there is the unusual sensation of having sawdust shovelled over the top of you. So far, so terrifying. The idea is that you last as long as you can (between 10 and 20 minutes) before getting out. You should feel like you’ve done a huge workout at the gym. Although ‘should’ may be the operative word. Cocktail scrub Usually if you’re in a spa and someone offers you a mojito, you would enjoy drinking it. But not with this treatment. You’ll be generously covered in sugar, lime and mint mixed up in a cocktail shaker. Although be warned, you might fancy a drink afterwards, for some strange reason. Mud bubble bath Available at some spas in Australia, this kind of treatment involves writhing around in the mud at the beach and mixing it with sand and the exfoliating benefits of the incoming surf. When you’re suitable covered, you then run in to the refreshing ocean to wash it off. Works better Down Under than it might on the South Coast in January. Turkish spa Ok, so most of us have heard of this but not everyone has experienced the true Turkish spa experience. It is often slightly diluted for our more Western tastes. Go for a proper spa bath in Istanbul and you might be shocked by exactly what goes on. A toe nibbling experience Becoming more common in the UK, fish foot spas originated in Asia. The fish possess antiseptic saliva and love nothing more than nibbling the dead skin off your feet. They get fed and you get beautifully smooth feet. Everyone’s a winner. But it certainly feels very strange.
