Some of my strongest business and success influences are Napoleon Hill, Robert Kiyosaki and Donald Trump. Although each of these guys has different and unique lessons and experiences, they all agree on many of the same things. Especially since Hill is the father of “The law of Success.” One definitive lesson they all teach, and so do many others, is that you never give up. When you are in the pursuit of something great, something you believe in and have really thought out, you must persist even when you want to quit. There is something magical about that simple statement. Never give up. There is a huge source of power there. It is so often true that the success we crave and the goals we’ve set will be achieved just on the other side of what seems like the lowest point. That point where we just want to throw in the towel. I can speak credibly on this many times in my life, both personal and professional. Before the economy torched itself back in ’08 my previous business was doing well and about to grow into a much higher level. We had finally gotten through a lot of the hard times and 7 day work weeks to create a thriving multimedia consulting and development firm. But up until 2007, it was a struggle for many years. I can still remember running across busy intersections in Orlando with my bandit sign that touted my website design skills and my phone number. And although those stupid signs did get the phone to ring, they really didn’t bring in the big jobs. I’m sure you’re surprised to hear that. So there I was, risking my life for $750 a month if I was lucky. Or passing out flyers, or buying radio time that did not even get me one phone call. In the beginning, that’s sometimes the way it goes. As entrepreneurs and small business people, we have to learn the hard way in many cases. The point is, I did learn many valuable lessons even in those days when I might have been flattened by a busload of tourists. And as time went on, I worked hard and learned much. There were many times when I wanted to give up. But I wanted so much to succeed, to create something from nothing, I didn’t let anything stop me. Not traffic, not being evicted from an apartment and living in a motel for 6 weeks, having to move out of Florida for a time, nothing. And even though that business is no longer open, I am not downhearted about it. We made it. It was only due to extraordinary circumstances beyond our control that put an end to our company a few years back. However, it did lay the foundations for my new business. One which I hope will grow even stronger and allow me to help even more people than before. One last thought on perseverance and not giving up. There may actually come a point when you have to call it a day. If you get to a point where you know nothing will turn things around and you don’t want to throw good money after bad, then it’s okay to put a stop to things. At the very least, to step back and make some drastic changes. None of us are perfect and our best laid plans don’t always come through. Failure is part of success. You will fail in your pursuit of success. But one failure should be looked at as a setback or temporary defeat. You may have to give up a specific battle, but don’t surrender the whole war. And if you only have time and sleep to lose, push on. As any successful person will tell you, the prize is right around that last hard corner. Please come and check out our article library.
