For most women like you, deciding when to take the first response pregnancy test is a matter of grave anxiety and concern. While a part of you is desperate to know whether you have conceived this month, the other says to “wait for your missed periods”. Taking this test too early can yield negative results –even though you may be pregnant. So what do you do? Understanding the Working of at Home Pregnancy Tests Before you go ahead with our decision to carry out the early pregnancy test, you need to understand how the test works. These tests detect the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine sample. Regular production of this pregnancy hormone takes place only after the embryo lodges itself in the endometrium. In certain cases the test detects the presence of hyperglycosylated hCG (H-hCG) as well-- which gets released soon after the process of fertilization takes place. Tests available over the counter are not too sensitive to H-hCG. However, if these early pregnancy tests manage to detect H-hCG, then you can expect positive news early. How do you get Early Results of Pregnancy? Some tests promise early results of your pregnancy—even 3-4 days before the date of your missed period. They assume the presence of a 14 days long luteal period. (This is the time period between your ovulation and first day of periods). So, if you luteal phase is of 12 days –which happens to be four day before your missed period and nine days after the ovulation takes place—then it is too early to take the test. Longer luteal phases of 15 days have a higher chance of reporting the status of your pregnancy; albeit they are a little early too. Then what about 99 percent Accuracy Levels? Well, this is a valid question in regards to the accuracy and timings of at home pregnancy tests. But if you read the instructions on the package carefully, you would note that these tests promise 99% accuracy, only if taken on the date defined for your missed period –not early. Moreover, day 28 of your menstrual cycle may not always deliver the correct results for your pregnancy test. Limitations of taking Pregnancy Tests Early • You may end up with false-negative results. • You feel crestfallen and undergo undue stress if the results prove to be negative—even though you are pregnant. • You lose the amount invested for the early pregnancy test. In a nutshell, the best time for taking early pregnancy tests is when you cross the date of your missed period. If you keep a track of your menstrual cycles, then delay your test until you have crossed the lengthiest menstrual cycle that you have ever had.
