A domain name is very often taken for granted. Most of us visit websites day in and day out without a thought to the domain names that we type into our internet browsers. TLDs can be divided into 2 groups, "Country Code Top Level Domain" (ccTLD) and "Group Top Level Domain" (gTLD). ccTLD is basically used to denote the country in which the website is based. It follows the ISO3166 two letter country codes. For example .us represents the United States and .uk represents the United Kingdom. For a complete list, just do an online search for ccTLD. For internet marketing, we are more interested in gTLD's. The following are basically what they are used for. Many new TLD's have been derived but these are the original seven.
.com – commercial organizations (most commonly used)
.edu – (higher) education organization
.gov – government organization
.int – intergovernmental organization (such as NATO)
.mil – military
.net – network Infrastructure organizations (also alternative to .com)
.org – originally for non-profit organizations (now used for any organization) The word or name used to the left of a TLD is a node that we will use to identify our online business or website. For example in the domain name mywebsite.com, 'mywebsite' is the node and '.com' is the TLD. It is that simple! So moving forward, how do we choose a proper domain name for our website? Common sense and creativity plays an important role here. For example, if your website is about antique furniture and your name is John, a possibility for a domain name would be "johnsantiquefurniture.com". If you are in the make money online niche and you are specializing in traffic generation, you could consider using the domain name "traffictoriches.com". The sky is the limit! Just remember that the domain name you choose should reflect what it is you are doing with your website. It would be helpful to spend some time to come up with a few possibilities of domain names, go through each one and select the best name to use. Once you have decided on the best domain name that you want to use. You will need to get it registered. This is equivalent to registering a company name that you want to call your business. In the process of registering your domain name, a search will be done to make sure that the domain name you have chosen has not already been used by someone else. This is a must to avoid any dispute that will arise if more than one person or company is using the same domain name. To register your domain name, you will need to use the services of a Domain Name Registrar. These are companies that help you get your domain reserved only for you to use. For their services, there is a nominal fee that is charged by the domain name registrar companies. It is advisable to look for a few domain name registrar companies for a comparison of services and fees before engaging the services of one.
