Non-stick pans are normal cooking pans which are coated with a non-stick material that prevents food from sticking to the surface of the cookware during the process of cooking. Most of the non-stick pans are coated with polytetraflouroethylene commonly known as PTFE. However, newer materials are being used now because of the health concerns raised by the use of PTFE coated pans. When PTFE coated cooking pans overheated beyond 350 degree centigrade, the coating begins to dissolve releasing by products (PFOA) which is dangerous to birds and can cause polymer fume fever to human beings. The biggest advantage of non-stick cookware is that food doesn’t stick to the surface of the cookware. Normal utensils require oil to prevent hot food from sticking to the surface whereas in non-stick utensils very little or no oil is required. Following are the advantages of non-stick utensils: 1. Convenience: Using non-stick utensils is very convenient as they are very light weight utensils and easy to use. They are so light that one can easily toss vegetables in the air effortlessly. 2. Easy to clean: The traditional large and heavy copper and aluminum utensils were very difficult to clean. Non-stick utensils are extremely light in weight and since the food doesn’t stick to the surface of the utensils it becomes easier to clean it as well. 3. Consumes less oil: Health conscious people would prefer less oil being used in their food. By using non-stick frying pans one can cook food in very less or no oil at all. This is the main reason for its popularity in this day and age of health conscious people. However, there are some disadvantages that come along with the advantages of non-stick utensils. They are as follows: 1. Costlier: There is a price to be paid for quality. Every non-stick utensil, even in the lower end of the price range would be more expensive than traditional utensils of stainless steel and cast irons. This is because of the complex manufacturing process involved in non-stick utensils. 2. Durability: One cannot use non-stick cookware sets for a longer time period because the non-stick coating keeps on wearing off and hence losing its important property of non-stickiness. 3. Health issues: Cooking food at higher temperatures is hazardous as the non-stick coating begins to melt at higher temperatures. Thus, food should not be exposed to high flames on non-stick utensils. Thus, knowing the advantages and disadvantages of non-stick utensils will help you to make a well informed buying decision.
