Writing has often been seen as both a hobby and a business. Many people write diaries and notes in journals and they may do that for many years. Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson are good examples. Another is Eleanor Roosevelt. In fact you may be doing that right now for your own reasons. As for me, I see that kind of writing as a personal hobby. I started as a hobby writer many years ago at the urging of one of my grade school teachers. Miss Thuss said to me: " Terry you seem to have trouble expressing yourself when you talk and try to tell us your ideas here in class but when you hand in one of the written assignments I give you to do, you have a way of writing down your ideas that is both interesting and entertaining for me and others to read." After her comments, I was inspired to start to write a daily diary. My diary became a way for me to keep a record of what was going on in my life and also a way to express many of my rather abstract ideas and far out thoughts at that time. Over the years since then, I've been honing my writing skills at every opportunity. In fact, at one time, several years ago, I asked one of my brothers to run my business while I took a job as a sales letter writer with an advertising agency in Dayton, Ohio. I did that because I wanted desperately to learn as much as I could about writing for business. As it happened, my boss was an award-winning copywriter, an excellent, gifted and very creative writer. He became my mentor, my teacher. I can hardly begin to explain here all that he taught me. In fact, what he taught me was much better and much more practical than any of the college writing courses I'd had previously. In short, I came away from there, after much sweat, hard work and success as an award-winning writer myself. So, how can you become a better, smarter, and clearer writer for profit if you decide to change from writing as a hobby to writing for profit? There is no easy way. However, I can help you in several ways by verbally walking down the obstacle-strews paths ahead of you. I can do my best, based on my writing experience, to mentor, guide and help you overcome, get around, and remove many of those obstacles and problems. How? I'll tell you how. Let's assuming that you are already what is known as a "wordsmith," (somebody working with words). One who loves to understand and delve into the deep meanings and history of words. You can be taught to polish and develop that talent in many creative ways so that your writing improves in precisely the ways you will need to profit from all of your writing in the days ahead. Words (arguments, lyrics, languages, terms, chats, tidings, rumors, promises, commands, passwords, meaningful units of language sounds, utterances, expressions) are the tools of your trade. The arrangement of those words is what talented, profitable writing is all about. Therefore, before you write anything, you need to think. Think deeply, long and carefully about the very best, most effective way you can form those words into sentences full of meaning for your reader.
