Wayne Hartung is a seasoned business professional with 25 years of experience. In his past, he was appointed as small business delegate of lower Alabama by Senator Tom Delay to represent the needs and concerns of small business to Congress. As an entrepreneur, former employee, and employer, Wayne Hartung has seen business from various angles, but knowing when and how to grow your business can be difficult. As a student of business and President of two businesses, Wayne Hartung says the first critical step for every business owner before planning any business expansion is to develop a business strategy. “When you first started your small business, you performed a lot of research and developed a plan. This plan is still need when you expand. Don’t lose sight of your goals and the practices that made your small business a success in the first place,” says Wayne Hartung. As your company grows, so do some of the challenges. If you were friends with your employees before, any expansion or franchise locations will make such relationships impossible. Wayne Hartung knows larger business require a less intimate management approach from owners but employees, even close ones, must be held accountable for their responsibilities. In every business, employee and customer service relations are important. “You want your company to be consistent in quality. Competition is fierce and the reputation of your company will suffer if your company doesn’t deliver it consistently,” says Wayne Hartung. Also, customer service is essential for all success; if customers are unhappy they will not return for future business. If you are creating a franchise, Wayne Hartung says spread the word. “Loyal customers will come back and may find a franchise a more convenient place to go,” says Wayne Hartung. That is why consistency is critical. Look at different marketing channels, find out where and how people in your community search out business. “Use social media, use the newspaper, advertise online, create a website; there are multiple tools to advertise your expanding company and promote additional business,” says Wayne Hartung. Like any expanding business, there must be a positive cash flow. If you are losing money by expanding or purchasing a franchise, cash flow management is critical. Wayne Hartung says this comes down to management and careful pre-planning before expanding or growing any business. For any expanding or growing business, there are risks involved. Wayne Hartung recommends thoroughly researching your options and developing a business plan as carefully as when you developed your first plan.
