Satire, sort of .. . my slightly funny side of serious What would the U.S. look like if McCain/Palin had won thepresidency in '08? Christianity 101, drilled into me through 10 years of Catholicschools from elementary to high school: Heaven and Hell, respectively, are places to work towards entering joyously andavoiding at all costs. Purgatory was that ambiguous place wheresouls not quite pure as the driven snow yet not as dark as thedevil's--went to "dry out." Think of it as rehab for theslightly sinful before they could be rehabilitated into Heaven.
Purgatory comes to mind envisioning a John McCain John McCain and Sarah Palin Sarah Palin victory. The mental picture resurrects these old teachings that Ihave long abandoned, for I am too sinful for two of those placesaccording to some on the religious right. You see I believe in equal marriage rights for all; I believe inwomen's reproductive rights; I believe we all have a right to ourreligous or non-religious lives; I believe in separation of churchand state; I believe every human being has a right to lifetherefore a right to medical care; I believe in equal wages forequal work regardless of sex; I believe that workers rights shouldbe protected; I believe in fair taxation; I believe in truedemocracy where government is of the people, by the people for thepeople; I believe all the world's wealth concentrated in the handsof a few is obscene. See, my lists of "sins" are endlessly long and qualify mefor the deepest of damnations.
The odd couple and their party whocompeted for the presidency almost four years ago do not believe inany of those things. What would Amercia--oops sorry--had a Romneymoment. I mean what would America look like now if those two hadbeen at the helm? Scary movies and nightmares have never been my forte, so I shudderto think what the view of U.S. lanscape would have been. McCain, ofthe old school, "do as I order or else" would have sentan already tumultuous Middle East into an explosive powder keg.Could you imagine him dealing with Iran and encouraging Israel todo whatever it takes to protect its sovereignty, even if that meantoutright war without negotiations explored further? Which brings us to what Vice President Palin would have contributedto the office.
Could you imagine her in a room with Russia's Putin? She might not be able to resist asking him if he could see herhouse from his backyard. Her foreign policy knowlege is sort ofequal to a fifth-grader's (sorry fifth-graders), so forgetembarrassing geographical moments: It might have been dowrightdangerous to unleash her to any dealings on a global scale. Our current VP, Biden, is a loose cannon sometimes but at least hisgaffes are containable. Things like "the president has a bigstick" elicits widespread laughter but will not incite aninternational incident. Then again we do not know if the former governor who bailed on herduties in her Alaska to take up being an author/pundit and realitystar, would have lasted for the required four years, for we nowknow that she has a penchant for quitting midstream.
Furthermore,Palin was heard on her TLC reality show saying she loved theoutdoors and would rather shoot a moose, fish or kayak, than be in"a stuffy Washington office." Then there is Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and America's most wantedman, Osama bin Laden. The Republicans can't bring themselves togenuinely give President Obama his props for nailing the mostnotorious terrorist, but they couldn't get him for seven years, andI doubt if McCain would have had any more success than befuddledGeorge W. Bush. McCain thinks we should still be actively fighting in Iraq so youalready know what he would have done under his presidency.
Wars andmore wars fought on more and more credit which puts us into moreand more debt yet he preaches fiscal responsibility. I guess fiscalconservatism only applies when it comes to programs that help thepoor and elderly. For all Palin's pandering on death panels for the elderly, theGOP's ideology would hurt the aging population more than anythingPresident Obama has proposed in the Affordable Healthcare Act.Under a McCain-Palin leadership, budget cuts would have certainlyaffected those who needed assistence most for we see who there aretargeting now. Medicare, Medicaid. programs that assist withcollege tuititons like Pell Grants, healthcare, housing, unemployment benefits and feeding the poor.
If you think things are bad today, what would it have looked likewhen the odd couple slashed all these programs? More homeless andhungry when the unemployed are told to fend for themselves with nosafety measures; non-existent healthcare coverage means sicknessand overflowing emergency rooms; programs that help feed the needydrastically reduced; less kids going to college means youthunemployment would continue to rise. I could go on and on for theripple effect would have been enormous but I'm sure you get thepicture. Meanwhile, Wall Street and big banks would be enjoying theirbailouts with not an iota of regulations. For all the loud cymbalsclashing on the GOP side, they would have bailed out the banks justlike Obama did but without pulling the reigns on thatout-of-control "mob." After-all, free market is thecornerstone of their sermon and see this as unfettered"grazing" by the corporate world.
Big oil, big banks, bigprivate sector should be free to "police" themselves, trusted to be "good capitalists." The Bush-era tax breaks are still in place under Obama so you knowthey would have been etched into the Constitution underMcCain-Palin. Forget fightng to renew those cushy "welfare forthe wealthy" tax breaks every two years. It would have had apermanent seal of approval by now and Grover Norquist's pledgewould have been engraved in the Oval Office. A permanent state of purgatory for the poor souls of the land.
Buthey, that's better than that socialist, communist, Muslim,Kenyan-born radical Barack Hussein Obama guy trying to preach thatcorny "hopey change" thing to the masses, right? As theVP Palin would say, "You betcha!" If you like to write about U.S. politics and Campaign 2012, enter "The American Pundit" competition.
