You know all the usual culprits—globs of hair, scummy soap balls and shampoo that’s so thick it doesn’t quite make it down the drain. However, professional plumbers truly have seen it all, and there have been some epic finds in bathroom pipes. You never quite know what might be down there, especially if you have kids. For the bravest readers, here’s a glimpse into the literal underbelly of life as a plumber. Sometimes homeowners know exactly what’s clogging up their drains, but other times they play dumb and who can blame them? For example, one plumber arrived on the scene to find an older couple at a loss as to why their drains weren’t, well, draining. Had they practiced their surprised faces when the plumber pulled a pair of perfectly intact dentures out of the drain? Losing your teeth is usually something people would notice, but that’s just a sampling of the “sunken treasures.” How Did That Even Fit Down There? If you’ve ever wondered if a training bra would fit down a toilet, the easy answer is yes. The more difficult question to answer is what it was doing down a toilet reserved solely for men at one particular company. Keep in mind that training bras are small, and if a man is big enough to need a “mansierre” a la Seinfeld, he’d probably be shopping in the curvy section. However, most plumbers are tight lipped with an inferred don’t ask, don’t tell policy. It’s tempting to flush just about anything down the toilet when it stops working, whether it’s a goldfish or a disposable razor head. For the most part, those two items are small enough to pass through the drains, although they can still cause trouble (and childhood trauma if the beloved goldfish departed rather suddenly). However, when one plumber pulled a fairly large air freshener out of the drain, he was probably tempted to tell the owners that a better bet would be a good scrubbing and maybe a blue toilet tab or two in the future. It’s fairly common to find toys in drains, but apparently the junior commander of this force thought the soldiers were well trained Navy Seals. Sadly, he or she was proven wrong. One particularly innovative inmate—for some unknown reason—decided to flush his bright orange prison pants down the drain. Apparently, nobody noticed the pants-less inmate roaming around his cell since the find came as a total surprise. He was supposed to be released just four days later. It came as no surprise that his sentence was extended post-pant shenanigans. Maybe your kid (or you—no judgment) got lazy, curious, or just forgot what a toilet or shower drain is really for.
