Best Attractions in Avignon

Travel & Tourism
Inspired by the times, built a long time ago when the city was ruled by Papal power, and tastefully created by talented people who understood architectural designs – these are some distinctive qualities that most attractions in Avignon possess. These very same qualities are the reasons why many of Avignon's ancient architectural structures are highly popular to a lot of people of different nationalities and ages. There is no doubt that this picturesque city will always have visitors interested to experience its delightful and appealing sights.
Some of the most favorite destinations in Avignon are the following:
Cathedral Notre Dame des Doms
Built in 1671 to 72, this religious building was transformed into a venue for religion and artistry. It has gone through various alterations through the years, but still has that sense of beauty that appeals to a lot of people. One of its appealing features is the gold statue of the Virgin Lady, which is perched atop a tower. The statue is said to weigh around 4500 pounds and measures around six meters in height.
Pont St-Bénézet
Said to be the oldest structure constructed along the Rhone River, this impressive ancient bridge had been rebuilt many times and had lost some of its parts in the mid-1600s. Being one of the main attractions in Avignon, Pont St-Bénézet is strategically located as it is just a few minutes away from some Avignon hotels. It is also quite accessible to tourists coming from a hotel orange.
Collection Lambert

This gallery, which was opened to the public in June 2000, holds various artworks from the 1960s to the present. The artworks that can be seen in the gallery mainly focus on figurative painting, conceptual art, minimal art, land art and also photography. Popular Provence artists, whose works are featured here, include Andres Serrano, Robert Ryman, Sol LeWitt, Cy Twombly, and many more. There is a yearly exhibition held each year inside this gallery. This contemporary art venue aims to trigger the interest of more young viewers as well as adults.
Fort St Andre
Fort St Andre has offered a spectacular view of the city since the 14th century. Anyone can go to this tourist haven any time of the year. For a considerable fee, you'd get to enjoy the views of Avignon and the Rhone Valley. Resting on a hill, this old structure houses beautiful gardens within its walls.
Palais Des Papas
As the chosen haven for Popes in the olden century for security or health reasons, the Palais Des Papas proudly stands as a popular monumental structure. It is a large Gothic palace that embodies the importance and essence of European power. This awe-inspiring attraction had been standing strong since 1335 and was originally built for Pope Benedict III.
To see all these main attractions in Avignon, you may want to check with the staff of the hotel Avignon where you are staying to see if they have guided tours that include all these impressive structures in the itinerary. Being able to see all these tourist allures while in Avignon will certainly make your vacation in this French city an experience of a lifetime.
