Vertical communications describe the communications that go up and/or skip the chain of command. Horizontal communications are those that go from employee to employee who are at the same level in the hierarchy of the company. They each have their place, but it is the vertical not the horizontal that most companies should be embracing.
As long as there have been hierarchies, there have been horizontal communications. There is just no way to keep employees from talking to each other. Aside from the taboo of how much someone makes, employees will talk about everything else. If they are not getting any communication form above, they will make things up. This type of communication can be harmful if the company is going through changes and is not communicating why to its employees.
A company can help itself stand up when those who run the company are clear and honest with employees about what is going within the company. By communicating intent and reason, the company can help employees understand what is going on, and it can quell the rumor mill.
More importantly, vertical communications should run both ways. It is irresponsible to think that the CEO and board members of the company know everything. Often, when it comes to workplace innovations, the employees who actually do the work are better at innovating efficiencies than the experts at the top or the consultants brought in from elsewhere. It is important for employees to not only have access to their bosses, but also to those higher up in the company, especially if communications and messages are to be passed effectively. While a CEO may not have time to hear from all of a company's employees, the manager of a division should not have any problem with an open door policy.
