Double world champion VivianCheruiyot said it is only an Olympic gold medal that is missing inher closet and expressed determination to make for the deficitduring the London Games. Having won almost all major titles that are on offer in athletics,the 28-year-old Laureus Sportswoman of the year believes she is ingood physical form and right frame of mind to bag her first Olympicgold medal next August. "I have won major titles in athletics. However, an Olympic goldmedal still remains my ultimate dream.
One can win races and breakworld records, but an Olympic gold medal is still the dream ofevery athlete," Cheruiyot told Xinhua at her training base inEldoret town, about 350km west of Nairobi. "With it, you will feel you have gone the whole cycle, with yourname being etched forever in the annals of history. It is thereforemy determination to win the gold medal at London 2012." The diminutive runner, fondly known as "pocket rocket" said hertraining is evolving progressively, considering that she last racedfive months ago. She says her "comeback" race will probably be inDoha in Qatar.
"I will run two races to gauge my form before I decide whether ornot to take an onslaught on the 5,000m world record that everybodyhas kept asking me about, though at the moment it might not be apriority since I am focusing on the Olympic Games." She said it is still too early in the day to determine whether ornot she will run both the 5,000m and 10,000m races the same way shedid in Daegu in 2011 where she won a gold in each event. "That decision will come later on. The year 2011 was a very specialone for me which culminated into my being declared Sportswoman ofthe year. This year I am still weighing my options." Will she be under pressure as the woman to beat? "I expect stiffcompetition from my fellow Kenyans, Ethiopians and Russians.However, with good preparations and a fit body, I expect tosurmount the pressure." Cheruiyot is among the elite athletes that organizers of the DohaDiamond League meeting have invited for the event. Cheruiyot will be running the 3000 metres race in Doha withcompatriot and World Indoor 800m champion Pamela Jelimo taking offthe blocks in the 800m race.
She dispels the view predominant in some quarters that Kenyanathletes owe their success in athletic as a result of geneticendowment saying that it is hard work that sees them through. "There is no secret to success other than hard work. Not even foodor special training will contribute to your accomplishment." Cheruiyot's sentiments are shared by her former coach and mentorColm O' Connell who said that though there is no other secret toKenyan athletes' prowess other than hard work, a number of factorshave combined to contribute to their achievements. "I have coached Kenyans since I arrived in the country in 1976 andone fixation that comes out of them is their determination to exceland follow in the footsteps of those who have been there beforethem. A tradition was set in the 1968 at the Mexico Olympic Gameswhich is still being followed," he told Xinhua on May 2.
O'Cornell, who has coached several Olympic champion and worldrecord breakers, believes the setting of the small town of Itenwhere most athletes base their training due to is high attitude andserene environment is also a contributory factor to the Kenyansuccess story. "The homely setting away from the limelight and hustle and bustleof life offers the athletes an ideal surrounding for concentration,and they like it that way. Their simplicity and down-to-earthdemeanor has contributed to the longevity in athletics because theyare capable of handling success." He said most Kenyan athletes do not change their diet ad they eatwhat they were eating before stardom came knocking. "Their mantra has been:'Why change a diet that has contributed inmaking you who you are today?' They don't use supplements noremploy the services of dieticians. They remain their true selvesforever." Giving herself as an example, Cheruiyot said Kenyan athletes, mostof who come from the Rift Valley region of the country, start theirengagement with athletics at a relatively tender age.
"I started running as a twelve year old girl and have continued todate. This is the route that most athletes follow because a trendhad been set. It is a lifestyle."
