It is estimated that $65 million is lost each year in the United States in home invasions, muggings, and in other violent crimes. It is estimated that $600 billion is lost per year due to fraud. Work place violence caused an estimated $30 billion to American businesses last year. It is important to be aware a crime can occur, anticipating the location, time, and taking action to reduce the chance of it happening. Crime prevention is key to stopping the ability and opportunity for a criminal. The use of instinct, knowledge, common sense, and awareness can make you a tough target. The Basic Principle The basic principle idea to prevent yourself from becoming a victim is usually to just avoid any possibility of getting into a dangerous situation. While one should be prepared for anything and armed with some form of self-defense device, it is always better to just avoid getting into a mess in the first place. Thus, the basic principle of self-defense and crime prevention is to always stay alert and to take notice of the things that happen around you on a daily basis. This doesn’t just include the terrain around you, but also (more importantly) the people you see and how they act. If someone is up to something this will usually show in their body language and your gut instinct will always help you figure this out if you can spot it on time. Another good and simple way to avoid being a victim is to become someone who is a difficult target. One way to do this is to exercise and be fit so that you look like someone who is physically very strong. But this isn’t so easy to do, so is there a better way? Yes! You have to show that you are capable, strong and self-confident. Walk with your head up high and always stretch to control your space. Show the world you are proud of who you are and that nobody can take your personal little cube of air from you! Home Security When it comes to home security, a similar principle can be applied as the one above. Be alert of things that are happening! If there are reports of brake-ins in your area, then you should probably prepare for this. Never think that it couldn’t happen to you, because your chances are actually around 35% that your home will be burglarized at least once in your lifetime if you are living in the US. To decrease these chances your home should also look like a difficult target. Buy a watch dog, install fake security camera, get new locks and stronger doors and make sure your yard is well lit during the evening. It is highly recommended that you purchase some sort of home alarm system if at all possible and within your budget. But remember not make mistakes that could cost you a lot! Always check the locks, close the first floor windows and coordinate with your neighbors and friends that if someone goes on a vacation the others should check on their home, clear the mail and perform other similar helpful, common sense activities.
