Almost all of us experience stress on a daily basis, which in fact becomes an integral part of our lives, thanks to the fast paced and hectic life we all are leading due to some way or the other. And it is this very stress that is causing weight gain in a lot of people across the globe. In fact, the latest research conducted on stress weight gain suggests that more than 90% of the so called obese or overweight people are emotional eaters. These are the people who tend to overeat during stressful situations, which is actually an incorrect response. Though it is impossible to feel happy and stress free all the time, and not stress affects the body badly, but it is the experience of being in real distress that is actually harmful and leads to emotional eating behavior. Some of the most renowned psychologists have defined stress in their own terms. The gist of all those definitions is that stress is actually our body’s non specific response to internal and external demands made on it. The moment our body experiences distress, our brain activates it fight or flight response. The response usually occurs in situations or circumstances where the brain perceives a threat to your well-being. It is this very response that leads to the overproduction of a hormone called cortisol. This hormone is found to be the reason behind obesity in most of the people, which results in stress weight gain. Cortisol is also referred to as stress hormone. It acts as an energy regulator as it does the job of distributing fats cells to hungry tissues. Various researches have indicated that there is a direct link between overproduction of cortisol and obesity. When there is excess production of body fats, then it makes the body fats get stored in the abdomen region. The reason behind it is that the hormone removes fat from the usual storage centers and relocates it to the area around stomach. Higher blood flow level and excess cortisol receptors are also the reason behind excess belly fat. The overproduction of this hormone can result in increase of appetite, cravings for sugar or sugar related items, etc. which all lead to stress weight gain. So, if you want a flat belly like those models and celebrities, then try to make use of different stress management programs and tips such as meditation, breathing exercises, to keep stress as much away as possible.
