Graduating and moving into the “real world” can be a daunting task for most college graduates. For the past four, five, or six years, you have lived in a bubble and eventually you are going to have to find your own place to live. So what do you look for in your first post-graduate apartment? Here are three things that property manager Michael Padova suggests looking for: 1. Look at more than the sample apartment If possible, ask the rental agent to show you more units than the display unit they have set up. Frequently these are dedicated units and do not face the same wear and tear that the rest of the apartment complex faces. Michael Padova explains that these kinds of units are extremely useful for showing the potential of what your apartment could look like but it is important to see more. If possible, ask the rental agent to show you the actual unit that you are considering living in. 2. Take a walk One of the best things you can do is take a walk around the campus of the apartment complex. Michael Padova suggests that you do this without the rental agent, as they can attempt to distract you from potential eyesores and problems while they walk with you. Michael Padova encourages potential renters to look closely at a few things on their walk. One thing that is indicative of the upkeep of the apartment complex are their common areas, says Michael Padova. Is there trash lying around as you walk around the streets? Another thing that Michael Padova says to look at are the cars parked at the complex. They are a good indicator of the type of people that frequent the complex. 3. Ask questions In this situation, Michael Padova encourages potential tenants to ask as many questions as they can before signing any paperwork. Frequently, Michael Padova says, realtors will try to dodge around unfortunate facts about the apartment. It is important to know about what utilities are available for the apartment, for example. Michael Padova also suggests that renters find out useful information, like what the office hours are for the complex and if there is an emergency line for late night repair calls. These kinds of things can make or break an apartment for many young people. In Michael Padova's professional experience, following these tips will greatly reduce the odds of getting scammed or getting a sub-par apartment as your first real place to live on your own.
