OJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel, the world's largest nickel and palladiumproducer, announces preliminary consolidated production results forthe first quarter of 2012 at the Polar and Kola Divisions inRussia, as well as at its international operations in Finland,Australia, Botswana and South Africa. Highlights: Overall saleable nickel production in the first quarter of 2012amounted to 76 thousand metric tonnes compared to 71,000 tonnes inthe first quarter of 2011, up by 7% or 4,800 tonnes. The growth oftotal volume in the reported period is due to increased output fromRussian Divisions (1,800 tonnes as compared to the same period ofthe previous year), launch of Australian operation Lake Johnston(1,600 tonnes) and increased loading rate of Norilsk NickelHarjavalta refinery in Finland (1,300 tonnes) Overall saleable copper production in the first quarter of 2012totaled 88,000 tonnes as comparing to 94,000 tonnes in the sameperiod of 2011 (-6% or 5,500 tonnes) mostly explained by thescheduled decrease of output from Russian Divisions (-5,000 tonnesas compared to the first quarter of 2011) In the reporting period, the company produced 649,000 troy ouncesof palladium, representing a decrease of 5% or 32,000 troy ouncesas compared to the first quarter of 2011. Reduction of palladiumoutput reflects technical decrease of production from RussianDivisions due to accumulation of unfinished stockpile. The Group'sdecrease of output was partially compensated by the growth of metalproduction from Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta refinery in Finland In the reporting period the Group produced 166,000 troy ounces ofplatinum, which is lower by 2% or 4,000 ounces than in the firstquarter of 2011. The reasons for the declined production ofplatinum in the reporting period are similar to those mentionedabove for palladium In the first quarter of 2012, the Polar and Kola Divisions inRussia produced 58,600 tonnes of nickel, being 3% higher than inthe same period of 2011. The reported results are in line with theapproved production plan. Copper production of the Russian Divisions of the Group totaled84,900 tonnes in the first quarter of 2012 as compared to 89,900tonnes in the same period of 2011. The reduced output of copper bythe Russian divisions is in line with the approved production planand the annual production guidance of the Group. In the reporting period the Kola and Polar Divisions decreasedpalladium production down to 612,000 troy ounces. The reduction ofpalladium output is of a technical nature due to accumulation ofstockpiles of the precious metal in the unfinished stage. The Russian Divisions produced 156,000 troy ounces of platinum inthe first quarter of 2012. The key reasons of changes in platinumoutput in the reporting quarter are similar to those for palladium. In the reporting quarter, the Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta refinery inFinland produced 13,000 tonnes of nickel, being broadly in linewith the approved production plan and exceeding the results of thesame period of the previous year by 11 % (or 1,300 tonnes). In the second half of 2011 Lake Johnston, an Australian operationof the Group, successfully restarted the mine and enrichment plant. In the reporting period Lake Johnston was ramping up to designedcapacity. The production results for the first quarter of 2012 are1,500 tonnes of nickel in concentrate. In the first quarter Tati Nickel managed to improve recovery ratesfor key metals thanks to stable performance of the enrichment plantand optimization of reagent flows in the flotation process. As aresult, in the reporting period the output of nickel in concentrateby Tati Nickel totaled 2,600 tonnes, being 8% higher as compared tothe first quarter of the previous year. The group's share in the production volume of nickel in concentrateby Nkomati (50%) in the first quarter of 2012 was 1,700 tonnes, which is 17% higher than in the same period of the previous year. The growth of nickel production is explained by successful ramp upto nominal capacity of the enrichment plant processing low gradenickel ore and normalized performance of the refinery processingore from the main zone of mineralization.
