A Home page does not only need to attract visitors, it needs to hold their attention and encourage them to explore the rest of the website. Often, Home pages are crammed with so many words that visitors get bored and click away to a website that is less cluttered and easier to read. To stop that happening, make sure your Home page has these 8 essential elements: 1.Headline - Begin with a clear and simple statement of what your business is offering. It should be no longer than 9 words. 2.Sub-heading - Summarise the services you offer. Avoid too many adjectives or excessively flowery language. 3.Benefits - People buy the benefits a product or service gives them. Explain how what you have to offer will make your visitors lives better. 4.First Call to Action - Make a Call to Action feature in the first third of the page, encouraging the reader to contact you, request a quotation, get more information or register for a free trial. 5.Key Features - This is the place to go into more specific detail about the services or products you offer. 6.Testimonials - Hopefully, you have some satisfied customers who have given you some positive feedback. Place a couple of their comments on this page to prove your business has a successful history and comes recommended. 7.Indicators of Success - This is where you place logos or images that show you have achieved success in your field. These can be qualifications, awards for your product or good customer service. If you are a member of a relevant professional body, put that logo in here too. 8.Secondary Calls to Action - Place these towards the end of the page and include 'teasers' about what the reader can find on the rest of the web pages, to encourage them to read on. Once you have these 8 essentials in place, consider the following: De-clutter your Home page by leaving areas of white space. This will break the page up and make it easier to read. To add extra value to your site and make it a useful resource for visitors, include informative items that can be downloaded, such as eBooks, PDFs and guides, but ensure they are relevant to the services or products you are offering. Lastly, you may want to appear friendly to your visitors but avoid placing a greeting at the head of your Home page, such as 'Welcome to... ' or 'Thank you for... '. When the internet was still in its infancy, this kind of language was standard practice, but now comes across as outdated and adds nothing to your site.
