Malacca is located about two hours from Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur. The bustling port that calls Malacca home was a popular trading center for over 500 years. Due to its strategic location, countries from around the world benefited from this trading post. The city itself benefited from this exchange too. As people from far and wide converged here in Malaysia's favorite port city, a new culture was born. It is for this along with other reasons, that this city has been named an UNESCO heritage site. Today the colorful traditions, architecture, religions, festivals, art and more can still be enjoyed. This beautiful blend of ethnic varieties makes this a favorite tourist spot. With influences seen from the Portuguese, Malay, European, Muslim, Indian and Chinese backgrounds Malacca has become like a beautiful cultural mosaic. Religion and festivals are colorful, traditional and ritualistic. They draw from some of the most prolific faiths around the world. Architecture can be traced back to Dutch designs along with some other styles. The sights, sounds, tastes and feel of this port city draws attention from visitors around the world. Some of the most popular sites in the city include of course the historic and well maintained buildings. Among the most notable is the brick red Christ Church in its easy-to-recognize Dutch style. Not to be missed, or overlooked, however, is the remarkably colorful (thanks to its Portuguese influence) is Portuguese Square. Festival time is a wonderful time to visit as the displays are lively, vibrant and offer a good glimpse into life here in Malacca.
