A lot of people have an irrational fear of dogs, but more commonly people are afraid of being assaulted and hurt by loose and stray dogs. In some way I have a similar fear even though I am a bit dog lover. While a lot of them are cute, trained and extremely tame and friends to people, some dogs were just not raised in such a way and you deserve a way to protect yourself. Often I hear reports in my local area of stray/wild dogs attacking joggers, children or damaging vehicles and personal property. While local authorities try to deal with all of these issues by taking them off the streets, they cannot be held accountable for just about everything, especially the human factor. Often the problem is also causes by irresponsible dog owners who don’t train their dogs properly or let dangerous dogs run freely around the area. However, the worst are those people who do not really care about their animal companion and torture them throughout their whole life! Sometimes they do it with some type of justification – they will say that they are training them to be powerful home security watchdogs. However, a lot of times these people do not really have any excuse whatsoever for the things they do to animals. Regardless of what the case is, if a dog charges at you unprovoked you have a right to defend yourself. While your body itself is often the last line of defense and certainly very capable, this is not something you want to use as your primary tactic. Dogs are capable of more than just biting you – they can do serious harm, spread diseases, maim or even kill people. Dog Repellents and Pepper Spray You probably know what pepper spray and tear gas are and how they affect people. These formulas are powerful enough to break-up riots and crowds of people, let alone an individual. However, regular pepper spray does not work very well on dogs and this has unfortunately been proven in practice. According to reports, regular pepper spray did confuse the animal for a short period of time, but overall did not do enough to actually stop it from attacking. The case here is not that it is not a strong formula; it is just that it has little effect on dogs. However, there are special chemicals that will repel dogs away from you and they are easy to buy online. The popular pepper spray manufacturer Mace, has their own unique products in this field as well and I strongly recommend them. The best one is probably the Muzzle which is even approved by the EPA. This device is not harmful to dogs, but its unique formula will drive them away from you and prevent their attacks. Once you spray the chemical into their eyes the effects will be almost instant. People who had to use it say that dogs immediately respond to the pain and try to look for a way to find relief which means they lose interest in what they were previously doing.
