There is likely to be very few comparable shores to the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, and of that the stretch that falls under the purview of the ancient port city of Trincomalee, stands out with its shimmering blue veil and golden brown sand dunes. It is apparent that the natural harbour is not the only gift given to the area by Mother Nature, who has gone beyond her call of duty in bestowing upon Trincomalee some of the best gifts it could give. Trincomalee, which is fondly referred to as 'Trinco' by the locals, is a well loved holiday destination where people start frolicking on the beach as the early strokes of the sun start to kiss the earth. The sea surrounding Trinco is said to be full of shipwrecks and a Japanese fighter craft, making it an interesting diving site, which is not limited to shoals of fish or corals only. The best season for diving and taking sea excursions in this area is known to be the months between April and October. What makes the exercise of diving or snorkelling all the more worthwhile in Trinco is its variety of underwater experiences and the numerous points from which you can take off. Each of these diving sites has exotic names such as; Knife Rock, Black Tip Rock, H M S Diomede and Pigeon Rock. Once you have your rented gear strapped on, your warm and welcoming assistants in place and you finally submerge yourself in the water, there will be needlefish, banner fish, butterfly fish, rays, hawker fish, trumpet fish, crabs and flute fish to greet you. As you frisk along you will find corals and if you take off from a place close to a shipwreck such as the H M S Diomede or the Admiralty Floating Dock you will discover some of the most fascinating sights from a diver's perspective.
