Boys golf: greenwich outshoots wilton, improves to 11-0 - Steel Wire Rod Manufacturer

GREENWICH -- It's hard to say that after so many outstandingperformances so far this season that the year has yet to begin forthe Greenwich boy's golf team. But given its second-half schedule and the goals of winning anFCIAC and state title in mind, its probably a fair assessment. Greenwich tuned up for their late-season gauntlet with a 149-171win over Wilton on Tuesday afternoon at Griffith Harris Golf Course . With the victory, the Cardinals (11-0) remained undefeated, along with Ridgefield and New Canaan, and face both in back-to-back days early next week.

However, beforethat Greenwich must meet with Trumbull (Wednesday) and FairfieldWarde (Thursday), two tough teams that each have two conferencelosses. "Each match is one match at a time, we don't take anyone forgranted," Greenwich coach Jeff Santilli said. "But we know it is us against the golf course and if thatscore holds up against the opponent then so be it. Trumbull andWarde are both very good teams; as long as I know my kids are outthere grinding it out and focusing shot by shot then I'msatisfied." Playing at home for just the third time, the Cardinals encountereda steady wind and a light rain for the majority of the round, butpersevered with some excellent performances. "The weather came in pretty quickly," Santilli said.

"We've playedin enough weather to know we have to grind it out and stay focused. We're happy we got the match in, it was good." Junior Chris Pavelick (35) shot the low round of the day, withStephen (36) and Paul Pastore (37) following close behind. JPRaftery carded a 41 to round off the group. "We're playing really well right now, we have a great squad,"captain Stephen Pastore said. "This is definitely the best teamwe've had.

We looking forward to the challenges this season." Greenwich did not have Danny Guise at its disposal, as he had to sit out because of a rule thatgolfers cannot play more than three times in a week. Fortunatelyfor the Cardinals, depth is not a problem. "For Chris it was a tremendous accomplishment for him to shoot thelowest round," Santilli said. "(Guise) wasn't in the lineup todaybut our JV team has been putting up varsity numbers, which makes iteasy for me to plug guys in." Scott Caggainello (41), Sam Marsh (43), Alex Birch (43), and Jack Kennard (44) posted respectable rounds for Wilton, which dropped to 4-4.

The Cardinals feel quite at home at the course dubbed "the Griff,"a course that Santilli and his players know inside out. "We are very tough at the Griff," Santilli said. "There are so manygreat courses in town but I'd be a fool not to play here. Most ofthese players have grown up here. We love it, its tough for otherteams to come here.

We know all of the nuances that other teams maynot know and it really works to our advantage." Greenwich 149, Wilton 171 (at Griffith E. Harris GC, par 36): G-- Chris Pavelic 35 , Stephen Pastore 36 , Paul Pastore 37 , JP Raftery 41; W--Scott Caggainello 41, Sam Marsh 43, Alex Birch43, Jack Kennard 44 . Records: Greenwich 11-0, Wilton 4-4.
