Dr. Tae Yun Kim has worked very hard to achieve her high level of success. She was born in South Korea, where girls and women were usually banned from studying martial arts. She was intrigued by the sport, and watched male family members involved in Tae Kwon Do. An uncle saw her dedication and drive, and decided to train her in Tae Kwon Do. Dr. Tae Yun Kim was only seven when she started studying. She became the first woman to earn the title of Grand Master in Tae Kwon Do. Dr. Tae Yun Kim believes children should start studying martial arts at an early age. She says that studying at a young age gives children many advantages. Dr. Tae Yun Kim says there are many forms of martial arts, including Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, and Judo. Each serves a different purpose. It does not matter which form you choose because they will all give you the following rewards: Fitness. Dr. Tae Yun Kim says fitness is an important component of martial arts. Children will learn to physically challenge themselves and get a cardiovascular workout. Self-Defense. One of the greatest skills martial arts gives children (and adults!) is the ability to defend themselves in a dangerous situation. Self-Confidence. Dr. Tae Yun Kim says martial arts builds a child’s self-confidence and self-esteem. They start to believe in what they can do, and focus less on what they cannot do. Self-confidence gives children a sense of accomplishment, making them feel that anything is possible. They learn to set goals and to believe they can achieve them. Respect. Martial arts do not encourage violence. Dr. Tae Yun Kim says martial arts encourage the opposite of violence – they teach children respect. Martial arts stress the importance of treating others with kindness and value. They teach children to seek non-violent conflict resolutions. Self-Control. Dr. Tae Yun Kim notes the difference in some children between the first day of class and about a month into their training. Children become calmer. They begin to have more control of their actions. They are less disruptive, and show more respect for the classroom, the instructors, and the other students. Dr. Tae Yun Kim says these are lessons children carry into adulthood. They learn tolerance and self-discipline from an early age. Dr. Tae Yun Kim suggests parents enroll their children in classes when they are as young as six years old. Martial Arts also improves a child’s social skills and teamwork skills. http://www.parenting.com http://www.livestrong.com
